Having multiple supermarkets nearby was always nice because it allows one to shop around for the best deals. Stop & Shop and Walmart had their place. Unfortunately, up here we have a much more narrow selection, meaning Walmart has become our primary grocer (with Shaws) being number two. I will say that I miss Shop Rite (can't argue with that kind of cheap). They are correct in that Stop & Shop was habitually expensive, but that was compensated for by scouting the deep discounts they sometimes offered. |

Awww, they're dissing Pathmark, even though they got a nice picture of it in front the Manhattan Bridge! Part of the problem is not enough cashiers, but also the language barrier, because a lot of Chinese people shop there, but not a lot of people speak Chinese. That can clog up express lines, for instance. Otherwise, I thought their food is pretty good. Not great, but pretty good. |

Hehe, I didn't see any kind of smoking gun here or any major revelation showing any store as completely awful. If these 12 are the sucky ones then I guess overall we're in ok shape, grocery store-wise. I mean they can't all be Whole Foods :)your pal, Fred |

They are correct in that Stop & Shop was habitually expensive, but that was compensated for by scouting the deep discounts they sometimes offered.Isn't that usually the case? Most experienced shoppers rarely buy full price (at least I don't). I just play the waiting game until the price drops enough, then grab as much as I can! |

I visited a Stop & Shop once but I didn't find anything terrible about it, it was about the same as Pathmark. I find that busy stores have a certain amount of messiness anyhow - a really clean and neat store looks good, but may also indicate low patronage. |

Written by snobs who shop at Whole Foods and rely on consumer complaints (which are often baseless) to make judgment. That being said, Pathmark has declined alarmingly in recent years. Even the ones in nice neighborhoods are bad. Wal*Mart should not be on this list and Stop & Shop's only real problem is prices. |

That being said, Pathmark has declined alarmingly in recent years. They keep cutting the staff. The one by the Manhattan Bridge, they have like 2, 3 cashiers in the evenings, which can get bad since it can get busy then and they depend on the semi-automated checkouts, which break down frequently. I haven't been to an A&P in a very long time, but I wonder if the same practices are being done in the parent stores. |

We don't have them out here, but I've been in them in the NYC area and they can be pretty dirty. Cleaner than they used to be but I think that most grocery stores are. Ralph's is our version of Pathmark but generally cleaner and more parking. |

Stop & Shop and Walmart had their place. It's interesting that you note that as the second closest Stop & Shop sits right next to a Wal-Mart with both stores complimenting each other. Regardless, in terms of my shopping habits, I prefer Stop and Shop as it's clean and the products there tend to be fresh, while also being cheaper or relatively near Pathmark's prices, and it has the bonus of being close to home. Shop-Rite is becoming the second best since their sales are great, and the newly re-opened location is still in mint condition. Wal-Mart is our big box store of choice, but due to Target just simply being too far and too inconvenient to get to. And if we don't get it at those stores, we buy in bulk or BJs or go to "ethnic" supermarkets in Queens or in Baldwin. |
