Police say a father left his two children alone at Scott Park while shopping at Walmart and showering at LA Fitness.

Govindaraj Narayanasamy, 38, of Scott, was charged with two counts of child endangerment after township police said he left the 6-year-old girl and 9-year-old boy alone in the park for nearly two hours Saturday.

Officers were called to Scott Park at around 12:30 p.m. Saturday from a person who noticed the two children playing on the swings and slides alone without a guardian. The woman told police she had been keeping an eye on them for an hour because she knew the girl and became concerned.

Police officers were able to get Narayanasamy’s phone number and called him as he was driving back to the park. He arrived shortly after 1 p.m. and told officers he left the children only briefly while going to shop for snacks at Walmart in Raceway Plaza and shower at the LA Fitness in Great Southern Shopping Center.

Narayanasamy estimated he had only been gone for about 45 minutes, but the investigation revealed that he likely left the kids alone for nearly two hours, according to court records.

Police said Narayanasamy told officers he went to LA Fitness to shower after playing tennis at the park.

I've never really understood, what is the legal age at which a child can be left to supervise another child?

People hire 13 year olds to baby-sit 9 year olds, so that's OK. Evidently having a 9 year old baby sit a 6 year old is not. But where is the line? I'm guessing it's 12 or 13, but where is that stated?

In reality, it all depends on the maturity of the older child. Some 11 year olds are probably fine baby sitters, while some 13 year olds are probably awful.

It's different from state to state, and the circumstances also count. A 12-year-old babysitting for someone while her parents are at home next door is one thing; leaving a 6 year old with a 9 year old in a public park is something else.

I don't understand this one at ALL. When I was seven, I used to ride my bike to the playground--about 3 blocks from my Far Rockaway home--by myself, all the time. Nobody called the cops on my parents, and I never had any problems playing there. I used to sit in the car by myself as a kid while my parents went into the store. As kids, we used to play outside in the summer, go top the store, ride bikes all over the place, all unsupervised, all day long.

Since when did it become a criminal offense to let your kids play outside?

It’s the result of the way the newer suburbs have been built, in these places you can’t walk anywhere and as a result kids can’t go anywhere without their parents. This type of thing wouldn’t happen in rural or urban area.

My mom would sometimes have me look after my younger siblings in she was running a short earned when I as 8 or 9, she felt that as long as to knew how to dial 911 it wouldn’t be a problem.

I walked home from school 3/4 miles when I was 7. But my parents wouldn't have put me in charge of another kid when I was 9 - that's an extra responsbility.

Wtf?? Total BS. If the kids are properly trained (ie: no getting into cars with strangers, shouting "that's not my parent" when someone tries to grab you, keep a card with name/address/phone number in pocket in case they get lost), it should be fine to leave them in a public park alone for 2 hours.

Meanwhile the parent in this situation can't find anyone to hold accountable for a YMCA sending her child home early, leaving her alone on her front porch for about 2 hours due to a billing dispute... a few feet from where a fatal shooting had occurred just a few days earlier. Everyone who had a hand in that decision should be fined $10,000 at the very least...
