I boycotted him since the writers strike when I found him to have zero ability at humor and Colbert's show didn't seem to change it's quality at all.However, this is like the whole "jewbag" story. Why is it cool in our two most heavily populated Jewish cities to rag on oneself for being Jewish? Not that I don't like Jewish jokes, but there's is just low grade. |

On last night's show he had a story comparing Easter and Passover and why the latter is boring for children. The example for Easter was the much more fun for children pagan egg hunt on the White House lawn. On other such comparitive stories he also shows ignorance of Jewish traditions, such as considering Chanukah to be the equivalent of Christmas just because they are adjacent on the calendar. This is a common mistake for many "casual" Jews and I think it makes them unqualified to make self-deprecating jokes about Jewishness. He can still joke about hypochondria and other stereotypical Jewish qualities. Although actually he is of course free to joke about anything, buy I don't have to like it. I'll still watch his show and enjoy it nearly all of the time. |

It's one thing to make jokes about a group to other members of that same group because it's ok to laugh at yourself, but it's a little different when most of the audience doesn't belong to that group. Then they are laughing at Jews, at blacks, at gays, at whoever and that's not quite the same.I listen to a guy on the radio out here named Bill Handel and maybe because he's Jewish, he pretty regularly (more than daily) makes stereotypical jokes about Jews and money. I have wondered whether subjecting non-Jews to such humor on a daily basis wouldn't eventually lead them to have a negative perception of Jews and money. The same could go for any other group I would think. |

Unless I've got what you meant wrong, "The others can defend themselves" suggests that the other people he offends can defend themselves and you're suggesting that somehow Stewart is singling out Jews for abuse in his material. I thought his bit on Easter v. Passover was funny, particularly the whole Christian side of his thing ... maybe I'm missing something there ...I'm kinda surprised by the anger over what seemed a pretty funny bit. |

Could be ... but calling Stewart a terrible Jew is kinda surprising given that he had fun with both sides of that thing he did. He's bringing his kids up under both religions, much like Bill Maher's situation ... tends to make you think twice about the conflicts of Chanukkah bushes and such (have some of that in my own family with their kids) ... so given my own observations within my own, that whole thing he did was particularly funny to me. |

Stewart's "claim" was that Jesus has won the hearts and minds of the children by coöpting pagan rituals that Jews could have just as easily coöpted. And he compared an Easter basket with the Passover plate, completely ignoring the largely identical mishloäch manot for Purim, which corresponds with Easter in some years!One thing about Jews is that we don't like proselytizing to others. We don't want goyim to become Jews, but we do want Jews to know about Judaism. As for others defending themselves, what I meant was in response to Luch's claim that I only speak up when Stewart speaks ill of Jews and no one else. |

He's an atheist now and in no way Jewish or Christian. Although having a Jewish mother makes him Jewish, I have no problem with his apostasy. I also have no problem if Stewart's children are raised entirely Christian. I actually detest raising children in "both religions" as if they are compatible. Pick a side. |

A lot of people don't realize that hiding the afikoman is not an integral part of the Seder. It need only be set aside during Yahatz for use after Shulhan Orech (I forgot the name of that phase). It was only created to give kids who might otherwise be bored a fun diversion. |

Easter bunnies and egg hunting has absolutely no connection to the Christian element of the holiday as well. It's pagan ritual co-opted by the Church to ease the transition of the newly converted and to make conversion easier to begin with. Same deal with Christmas (Santa, trees, etc). I think the afikoman ritual was borrowed from Christianity, not the other way 'round. |

After a couple of hours wrestling with their online account management tools, finding (with difficulty) a phone number that would eventually (after a journey through an annoying menu) reach a live tech support person, and several long periods on hold while he investigated the problem, I learned the reason. More below the fold. I have a long, Polish last name with the letters "jew" embedded within it. I finally learned that OptimumOnline does not allow email addresses including certain "bad" words, and "jew" is one of them. The tech support person (who was quite competent and as helpful as possible) had asked his supervisor to override the system, but this apparently was not possible. I reluctantly set up a primary email address using a variation which did not include the offending letters. But this is not satisfactory. Today I tested the system, by setting up subaccounts using various words. I wondered whether they did not allow the names of religions. No, that's not it. I was able to set up accounts using "catholic," "presbyterian," and "buddhist." Is it national/ethnic identities that they block? Apparently not. I was able to use "irish," "german," "italian," and "hispanic." |
