If the Supreme Court votes down mandatory healthcare, the US is a Third World Nation

Why do we throw our trust in a panel of 9 old conservatives whose opinions conflict with 90% of Americans? The sooner the US collapses, the better.

The US is no longer united. Time to split into several smaller nations. Give the conservatives the Deep South and Texas, give people who want to legally murder others Florida. Just end this third world hellhole already.

Look at Detroit vs. Windsor. Which one is the hole and which one is thriving? That was just the beginning.

You know they're going to. Just look at the utter contempt for Americans exhibited by Scalia during the hearing.

We need to elect a Democratic Congress that runs on the premise of upending the inevitable decision, by opening Medicare to all. We need a Congress that will NOT allow people with guns to travel anywhere with them. Let them kill each other in their home states. It's bad enough we have to pay for unnecessary medical care.

I would rather live in a one-party democratic dictatorship than have what we have now. If only McCarthy didn't taint communism because the US today is a lot like Russia 100 years ago.

The new American Dream is to somehow get out. We should have just ceded to the terrorists because by then at least we could rebuild.

Read an interesting article about Ozzie politics.....there, as in most of the developed world, even the most "conservative" politics are "left of center" here. Nowhere outside of some third world dictatorships is conservatism American style seen.

BTW.. we didn't ceed to the terrorists...we elected them. Have a read through Ryan's budget. The republicans want, in an era of finally standing down, to increase military spending and pay for it with the funds that provide education, food, housing and healthcare of children and families. Their governing philosophy is craven and its results are just evil.

Elena Kagan is worse, and walking on thin ice though as a SC justice with a statement in arguing that young people should be required by the federal government to purchase health insurance because eventually, others will subsidize their health care in the future.
Whether "young people should be required to purchase..." is the case or not, the problem is "SHOULD be" is the key words there. That does NOT make it constitutional that the government FORCES them to do so. She needs to be looking at the constitution, and what it DOES permit, not what she or anyone else thinks it "should" say or wants it to say.

She made a perfectly reasoned argument. The same logic applies to Social Security.

The Constitution gives Congress the right to regulate commerce and mandates its work for the common good. Among the action that are for the common good, are food programs, education programs, jobs programs. All are Constitutional. Successful governments look out for the good of all. Justice Kagan is looking to do precisely that, as far as her position's capacity allows.

That's right....and they'll never be able to impose regulations requiring mandatory private investment accounts for retirement (which solely exist to provide the corporate oligarchy to rob them blind through "maintenance fees"). So eliminating Social Security is right out.

There is no such thing as "republican Medicare reform". They only want to eliminate it entirely (neglecting the fact that Medicare came about because private insurers refused to handle the elderly, as they file claims....and most lost healthcare coverage upon retirement).

There is a solution for that. Responsibility. By that I mean any gun owner, concealed carry or not, is TOTALLY responsible and LIABLE for any incidence involving their gun. That means George Zimmerman is liable for the death of Trayvon Martin. (IIRC he is anyway) Liabilities for death run to the tens of millions. Got that kind of cash handy? You ready to pay?

It's about time to get the insurance companies into another line of business.....All gun (any gun, particularly handguns, utilized outside of legal hunting seasons) owners must have liability insurance, or post bond or prove they can satisfy any lawsuit resulting from liability for their actions. You may have the right to own a gun, but that doesn't absolve anyone from the responsibility for what happens as a result.

They put parents away when their kids kill friends and family when playing with the fookin thing as it was just left in or on a dresser, unlocked, unguarded, unsecured. Time to expand on that. It's time to enforce real responsibility control on gun owners. Pay up or turn it in.

Its not a tax though. Its a mandate to purchase something. Noble as it may be they cant make the constitution say something they WANT it to say without the formal process to do so. Stretching its powers into areas it doesnt state is wrong and unconstitutional. I am not saying the idea is bad...only that it has to be done within the law and constitutionality of it unleas its legally changed.

Doesn't make a good slogan.

I think if subway fares go up, the terrorists will have won. I spoke to one of those Arabs (friend of Tom Friedman) and he assured me of that. But Saudi Arabia and our other Arab friends don't want the subway fare to go up. This is what separates them from terrorists,

This regulation of commerce promotes the general welfare. Congress is mandated with both tasks in the Constitution. An insurance system for healthcare only functions when 100% participate. Since we insist on retaining this leviathan instead of a tax based nationalized system or single payer system, the means for 100% participation must be found, hence the mandate.

Thanks for letting me know. I used to eat at Windows on the World. A few times I even went to Cellar in the Sky. I'll be sure to never never eat at the Congressional Dining Room. You may have saved my life, bingbong.

They won't let you near the Congressional Dining Room.

I knew Kevin Zraly, who started the Cellar in the Sky. Fortunately, he wasn't there when it happened, but lost it all.

Title corrected. All of the countries with government-mandated healthcare are heading towards totalitarianism.

IAWTP. The only really serious problem with the US is that the government is spending far more than it takes in on a long term basis. That will get fixed one way or the other within a few years. Either the Republicans will be put in charge and realize they have to do something, or else they won't, in which case they will be likely to recognize that their intransiegence is no longer being rewarded, and they'll compromise.

There are plenty of moderately serious problems, like increasing income inequity and household financial unpredictability due to the lack of a safety net. Those are bad for the people affected, and should be reduced, but they won't damage the underlying strength of the country. And there have always been such problems, usually more serious in the past than now.

That darned Constitution strikes again!

BTW, there's nothing preventing individual states from enacting an insurance mandate.

90 percent of what, I ask. A majority of Americans oppose the healthcare law, in part or in whole. A majority of Americans also have health insurance they were happy with before Obama and will (well, are) paying more for the same for no reason to themselves.
