Wow dude. Have you been reading my posts here at all?

I'll let go the stab at racist intent implied there and go to the black person's perception that black people can't do math.

It's a perception because Blacks are worse off at math, on average.

At worst it implies a genetic predisposition that has never been scientifically demonstrated

Seriously dude?

Some can. Blacks have an anti-intellectual culture because like all low-IQ groups (which includes White southerners, southern Italians, Greeks, and others) they aren't typically good at intellectual stuff, and people tend to be indifferent to hostile to things they aren't good at.

The biggest problem is that it's not an all-or-nothing thing. Some Blacks are intelligent, as evidenced by those that get into these schools. It's just that there are proportionally fewer of them than say among East Asians...

It's pretty g-loaded. I have been looking for an entrance exam-to-IQ conversion chart somewhere, haven't been able to find one. Perhaps because City Board of Ed. has an interest in not letting it be known that it's an IQ test.

I've believe that immigrants' children are exposed to a greater desire for academic success than children who can trace their American roots back several generations.

That's not the reason. Especially from the poorer countries (save Mexico), immigrants tend to be a select group, as there are huge barriers against international travel placed upon them that selects for the more accomplished/determined individuals. The average IQ of (non-refugee) African immigrants for example is 115 (as testified by an Ethiopian physics professor I once had), 3σ above the mean IQ there. I myself am a second generation Jamaican, like most of the Blacks at these elite schools...

Even in the black community, Africans tend to do a lot better than West Indians and native born blacks.

Or, the barriers against coming to the U.S. are highest against African immigrants, next highest against Caribbean immigrants (save Puerto Ricans, obviously), and least highest (obviously) against American Blacks. The average IQ of each group follows that pattern.

Immigrants have not been exposed to Jersey Shore or Playstation.

Then there's that bastard regression to the mean...

The fact remains that this is not a level playing field and some groups are more prepared for the exam than other groups.

As I said, dead wrong.

Hardly. Considering that your parents are pretty much your first role models, if they valued athletic achievement over "book larnin'", chances are you're not going to put as much focus on the academic side of your schooling. You would be valuing athletics, even if your talent isn't that great.

No, it's BECAUSE they are already accomplished at home that they seek new accomplishments elsewhere.

A guy ho feels accomplished in Jamaica hasn't done much in the big scheme of things. John Gunther wrote that the Lower East Side and Forest Hills were separated by 13 miles and 3 generations.

LOL. Great quote. I guess it's same for Lower East Side and Middle Village(just the mileage is slightly less).

I would include the immigrants' grand children in the immigrant category. I think that qualification would include most of the Jewish kids you knew in those schools.

That's cheating. In NYC in 2012, if you're going to include the grandchildren of immigrants in the immigrant category, it would include almost every student today. Especially in Queens and Brooklyn.

Using the Beastie Boys as examples of the typical Jewish kids who attended Stuyvesant in the 80's, they are like the kids I knew in elementary school and in college. They are American Jewish, and they come from families who have been in New York for many generations. They have no sense of belonging to a foreign culture like the Italians I grew up with, or the many immigrants I see around NYC today.

It's different today because of the waves of Jewish immigrants from Russia, Iran and even Israel. Before these Jews started coming to NY in 1979, when was the last big wave of Jewish immigration to American? Early 1900's? This actually relates to the NY-9 election in which a Jewish Democrat lost to a Republican. How can that happen in a district consisting of Kew Gardens, Forest Hills, and Rego Park. The answer is that the older American Jews have been replaced by immigrant Jews who don't see the world the same way. They aren't as liberal.

It's the generation loses first hand contact with the immigrant generation that loses the immigrant edge

It really works both ways. I have two close friends whose parents were immigrants. These friends were raised without video games, toys, and a strong sense of church and family. Having parents like that can be a tremendous advantage because the kids have nothing to do but study. No distractions. This seems to be part of the reason why Asian kids succeed academically.

But if it's as simple as having the "immigrant edge", why do Hispanics follow a completely opposite path?

I don't think so. By 2012 it effectively excludes the immigration waves before adoption of the Quota System in 1924. This is the group that has declined most precipitously among Stuyvesant's ranks. They have been replaced by different groups of immigrants, thanks to the 1965 immigration law.

why do Hispanics follow a completely opposite path?

I think there are significant differences within the Hispanic community. The Cubans, appear to have made more progress than other groups.

I still don't see the link between immigration and entrance into an elite school like Stuyvesant. That school was almost exclusively American/"New York" Jewish, populated with kids who were generations removed from immigration. But NYC itself has seen it's own immigrant population increase significantly in recent decades, so it should be reflected in the makeup of a school like Stuyvesant.

There's a long list of reasons why minorities don't perform as well Asian and Jewish kids. Go to Jewel and Main Street and observe the middle class Jewish kids and Asian kids a little further north on Main. They come from an environment that cultivates Stuyvesant students. Not as many minorities are as fortunate.

I think there are significant differences within the Hispanic community. The Cubans, appear to have made more progress than other groups.

There are differences. I don't know how significant they are. Most Hispanics under 40 seem to adopt a generic barrio identity of bling bling, Christian symbols(The US Hispanic ghetto culture has hijacked Christian symbols like the cross and other symbols---the gas stations near my home sells baseball caps with praying hands and wooden rosary necklaces for the barrio Mexicans who want to look all bad). Cubans probably have a different mentality because so many of them came through Florida, which was a "Southern" state until recently. I've been told that most Cubans, especially the waves who came in the 60's were mostly literate in Cuba, unlike the other Latino groups who come here as illiterates to perform manual labor.

People have said that the main reason why international companies like to set up shop in Miami(Univision, Telemundo, Televisa, etc......) is because Miami's Cuban population is literate and competent, compared to the labor pool of Hispanics in NYC and LA.

The Asians and Jews in NYC naturally pursue intellectual interests. That's why they are going to make up a larger percentage of Stuyvesant while blacks and Latinos are less than 5%.

The same people who complain about the cost of prep courses are the ones who find the money for Jay-Z/Kanye West tour and other intellectual pursuits. They blame.

These people in Flushing Queens who spend money on prep courses are not evil rich people. They're actually middle-class people with priorities. They should not be demonized by the NY Times.

the successful student for example or graduate who can't find a way to live up to their potential in their low-IQ milieu have an incentive to come to a First World country, and they do...

Maybe so, but a lot of people from China (who get smuggled in by boat, for example) are just poor peasants who scraped together enough money to pay smugglers. Skilled people have a better chance with work visas (H1B, I think).

To answer your claim: I DID go to test prep! I was 12-13. If my parents wanted to send me to test prep, I went. I'm not sure it helped. Another student at my test prep did not get in.

"The Asians and Jews in NYC naturally pursue intellectual interests.

Are you saying the genetics plays a part here? eh?

"That's why they are going to make up a larger percentage of Stuyvesant while blacks and Latinos are less than 5%."

Are you saying the Blacks and Hispanic kids are somehow dumb? If you read the article the way any normal person would you would see that is states that Blacks and Hispanics were not pushed into taking the exams OR advised to take prep courses. If they did, the story would be significantly different. Get it? eh?

"The same people who complain about the cost of prep courses are the ones who find the money for Jay-Z/Kanye West tour and other intellectual pursuits. "

Sure.....all the folks living in poor ass areas of NYC are just dying to spend their money on those concerts....what a loser you really turned out to be. Take for example East New York, Brooklyn. Take a walk around there and you won't find 2 dozen or so prep course academies like you would in Flushing.

"They should not be demonized by the NY Times."

Demonized? that's a rather HARSH word there....which the NYTIMES does not use there. They are merely pointing out that Blacks and Hispanics are at a disadvantage because the schools and the guidance personnel DO NOT stear these kids in the right direction to achieve success on these exams through prep course and some cases, they just flat out don't even care to mention that such an exam even exist for them to take it. You really SHOULD point that HARSH FINGER at the schools where these Black and Hispanic kids are attending!

It might. Culture probably plays a bigger role. Being from Queens, I can see the difference in minority culture, compared to the Asians and Jews of Flusing and Forest Hills compared to the Italian culture of Ridgewood that I am more familiar with.

The results would not be much different and people would be looking for other excuses.

Everyone knows about prep courses. Anyone can enroll.

LOL @ "disadvantaged". That's one of my favorites. "At risk" is another favorite of mine. Everyone knows about the prep courses. Anyone saying otherwise must be lying.

You don't see academies in Italian neighborhoods either. I'm not crying about it. The academies are in Flushing because there are enough kids in the community who seek intellectual activities after school. The Flushing kids are middle-class kids whose parents who chose to enroll them in courses. That's the culture in Queens' Asian and Jewish communities and that's why their kids succeed. Good for them. I don't blame them for succeeding. I blame myself for my failures.

Where are "dozens" of academies in Flushing? And if there was a demand in other communities, they would open there too.

Can you PROVE your THEORY? eh? NO you can't since you base it on racism. You can't stand to admit to the truth because you can't look beyond the racism you harbor in your soul.

Stop lying! plus it takes $$$$ ..they are not free....

The only one who IS LYING IS YOU .....LUCHIE!

Calculus and differential equations are not theoretical if you're going for a degree in physics, as one of my daughters is. As she says "math is the language of physics." She thinks math is a beautiful thing; it's all a matter of perspective.

I would think railfans could see this. So much of what interests us in railroads is bound together with math, from timetables to engineering to car plans.
