Afghans Riot Over "Desecration" of Koran

Sorry if there is another thread on this. I went back two days and didn't see one.

I can never understand what makes some Muslims think that the whole world should honor their holy book while at the same time, they have less than zero regard for the religious sensitivities of non-Muslims. If you want respect, you have to give respect.

Devout Muslims are at about the same stage of development and awareness regarding the primacy of their religion as devout Christians were about 600 or more years ago.

Considering their religion was founded 600 years after Christianity, it's not surprising.

(BTW, this is not meant as an excuse.)

Kinda hard to see one from two days ago when the story's dated 2/21 and you post it on 2/21, yes . . . ?

Well, if you can "never understand" it, then maybe you should read what's in the Koran that the Mullahs and other "scholars" quote over and over (context highly debatable) that justifies such an attitude for them.

Why is the US still there? after OBL was killed, the mission should've been over and let that place turn back to its '6th century state'. There's no hope for people like that going apeshit nuts over a fucking 'holy book'. Other than the really backwards people in the south that might get as crazy if the bible was burned, no civilized people should ever react violently over 'a book'.

Maybe it's not very extreme as the radical muslims, but there are radicals: KKK, neo nazis, etc. Maybe not just the south, but that's where they tend to be.

I think that you can very loosely compare their attitudes to the Christian attitudes of the 11th, 12th and 13th Centuries. The Crusades were a very brutal time and the soldiers had the blessings of the Pope. Of course, that was 1,000 years ago and we would have hoped the world has progressed beyond that but the radical Muslim still lives in the 14th Century, mentality-wise. Hopefully they too will evolve in time.

I'm just covering my basis about radicals of the religion. I did also say the radical muslims are probably the worst because of news like this. Burn a Koran and the world is set on fire literally.

Better that than spending billions keeping the 'infestation' at bay. All the US is doing is acting as the dam holding back the taliban. Eventually the US will have to cut its financial losses and just give up. I get it that it's not always great to admit defeat, but that area is basically a wasteland with opium as its main export. Nothing to gain by staying there. At least Iraq has oil, but the US already cleared out of there.

That would take them abandoning certain passages of the Koran and many Hadiths. Since most of them believe that they were revealed by Allah, that won't happen too soon.

The story was dated 2/21 but that doesn't mean the event occurred on 2/21. The news outlet could have posted the story a day or two after it actually happened and one of the sharpies on this site could have posted it from another source right after it happened.

The difference now is that Christianity is a lot more well-organized today than Islam was in the Middle Ages, when the Christians were burning people at the stake for heresy.

This isn't going to end well, especially for Jews. We always get caught in the crossfire. When the First Crusade was set up to liberate Jerusalem from the Muslims, the Crusaders killed every Jew they saw on the way up.

Very good point.

I think we should retain a small presence there so we can easily rout out any serious terrorist organization that tries to get going, but as far as the futile "nation building" effort, we should let that go...

Al-Reuters poll claims that over half of Americans support Obama apology over Koran burning

More than half of Americans back Obama's Koran apology

By Missy Ryan
Mon Mar 5, 2012 6:42pm EST
WASHINGTON (Reuters) More than half of Americans support President Barack Obama's apology for U.S. troops burning copies of the Koran, an incident that triggered a spate of bloody protests and attacks on U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan.

In a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Monday, 56 percent of those surveyed backed Obama, who has been criticized by U.S. Republican presidential candidates for apologizing to Afghan President Hamid Karzai. Twenty-three percent disagreed.

While the spasm of violence that erupted following the incident on a NATO base in Afghanistan does not appear to have significantly altered Americans' perspective on the war, 66 percent of those polled also said Washington should bring its troops home immediately.

Obama's formal apology and the debate that decision created have underscored the delicate course the president must tread in his campaign for re-election in November.

Afghanistan and other foreign policy issues are sure to take a backseat to the economy in the campaign but Obama is loath to give Republicans more ammunition in the crucial months before the elections.

The poll, conducted from March 2 to March 5, showed that far more Democrats supported Obama's apology, with 76 percent of them saying Obama made the right decision.

Only 37 percent of Republicans backed the apology, and almost half said Obama was not right to do so. Some 53 percent of independents supported the apology.

In keeping with calls from Capitol Hill, Democrats surveyed professed even less support than Republicans for a continued U.S. presence in Afghanistan.

Some 76 percent of Democrats said U.S. troops should be withdrawn immediately, compared with 53 percent of Republicans. Seventy percent of independents favored an immediate withdrawal.

The poll included 1,143 Americans interviewed online. The poll had a credibility interval of 3.4 percentage points.

Obama cannot allow the outcry over the Koran incident and other NATO missteps to undermine tentative security gains, weakening his ability to point to a series of security successes such as the killing of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, or worsen tensions with the mercurial Karzai government.

His decision received extra scrutiny when, several days later, two U.S. officers were shot dead by an Afghan inside the Afghan Interior Ministry, one of a spate of so-called 'insider' attacks on NATO forces since the Koran burnings took place.

The Koran burnings could be behind the death of up to six American soldiers.

On Monday, a suicide bomber killed at least two civilians at the gates of the base where the Korans were burned. The Taliban said the attack was an act of 'revenge.

Underlying the debate over Obama's apology are even larger questions about the future of U.S. involvement in Afghanistan, where over 10 years after the Taliban government was toppled the militant group remains a potent enemy.

Obama plans to pull all of the 33,000 troops he deployed in 2009-10, credited with turning around the long-neglected campaign in Afghanistan, by this fall, leaving around 68,000 U.S. troops. Most foreign combat troops are due to withdraw by the end of 2014.

Yes, the same majority that are atheists ad think religion should be banned want an apology for burning already desecrated by muslims korans.

You people are so coherent. No wonder you are converting to Islam in mass numbers.
