Woman shot during concealed weapon class in Chesnee still in hospital

The wife of a Spartanburg County sheriff’s deputy who was unintentionally shot Saturday during a concealed weapons permit class remains hospitalized.

Crystal Smith, 33, was struck with a .22-caliber bullet during the class, which was being taught by Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Deputy Calvin “Skip” Smith, who is not related to the victim.

Spartanburg Regional Medical Center spokesman Chad Lawson said Crystal Smith was listed in good condition on Monday.

The shooting occurred when Calvin Smith was showing another student in the course how to properly grip her gun when it discharged, and Crystal Smith, who was standing beside the other student on the firing line, was shot. Sheriff Chuck Wright said on Saturday that the bullet passed through Crystal Smith’s arm and entered her side.

Wright said Calvin Smith, a South Carolina Law Enforcement Division certified concealed weapons permit course instructor, was unaware a bullet had been chambered into the pistol. Calvin Smith was off duty when the shooting occurred.

The accident happened at a firing range at 820 S. Alabama Ave. in Chesnee. Crystal Smith was driven to the Raceway on Chesnee Highway, then transported by ambulance to a hospital.

Wright said the sheriff’s office would investigate the incident because Calvin Smith was not acting in an official capacity as a deputy or representing the sheriff’s office when the incident happened.

Nothing interesting, useful, or fun is 100% safe.

4 highly experienced skiers took one carefully evaluated chance too many and got themselves killed over the weekend.

I'm surprised someone like you missed the story from the St. Petersburg church and the pastor's daughter.

Whoever didn't make sure that gun was unloaded deserves to be punished.

Oh, and subject corrected. It's not like this couldn't happen with a training course in the police or armed forces. I'm sure you're not opposed to them using guns.

I am acquainted with a young man who enlisted in the army at age 19 and was the third level of seargent by time he was 23. Obviously he is well regarded. In the course of his fine career, he managed to shoot himself in his hand with a gun he didn't realize was loaded. Accidents happen. Obviously, the goal is to minimize them.

A gun is loaded until you are absolutely sure it is not.

Suck my dick, Nazi.

As the day progresses through a 12 hour period, a broken clock has an instant of time when it shows the right time and so it is with the Nazis. Gun control is the ability to properly hold the weapon and use it to precisely deliver a bullet to the center of the target.
