It goes back to the time of industrialization of America when people came off the farms where they did home-school or have the little neighborhood school, and into these big factories, so we built equal factories called public schools. And while those factories as we all know in Ohio and Pennsylvania have fundamentally changed, the factory school has not.”

Amusing, given that (a) he went to Penn State, which I believe is a state-government-run school, and (b) got PA to pay for a good portion of his home schooling expenses.

Public schools are inherently American. They were first started by the original colonists,long before there was a USA. Over in England, only the wealthiest could afford schooling. Beyond religious freedom, the colonists wanted to change that.

North Carolina is still conservative compared to the northeast and California, but it's very progressive for the south.

I think NC has a liberal governor and Obama won the state in 2008. It's not as liberal as Manhattan's Upper West Side, which I guess was what AlM was comparing them too.

He kind of has a point. America's public school system was formed in a different time and operates basically as if nothing has changed since 1850.

If he had only said that public schools need serious fixing, it wouldn't have been so foolish. It was his suggestion that government should get out of the school business that was pretty extreme.
