Weak Dollar Boosting US Profits

Weak dollar helping U.S. profits
By Matt Krantz, USA TODAY

The weak U.S. dollar might not help national pride, but don't expect to hear U.S. companies complaining about it.

The dollar in the first quarter was down 6.5% from a year earlier, says Deutsche Bank Private Wealth Management. That gave a significant kick to companies' profits, helping impress investors who already have lofty expectations after six quarters of earnings growth.
Scores of companies have reported getting a bottom-line boost during the first quarter. Specifically, 40% of the 25 stocks in the Dow Jones industrial average that reported profits so far have pointed to the weak U.S. dollar for helping their profits, says John Butters at FactSet. The other five Dow stocks have not reported results yet.

The weak dollar helps by making exported U.S. goods more price competitive and then boosting the value of sales overseas when converted back into dollars. "A weak dollar is a good thing for the U.S. economy right now," says Dirk Van Dijk of Zacks Investment Research.

Companies benefiting from the weak dollar include:
•Pfizer, a leading drugmaker, reported international revenue of $9.5 billion, which rose 2%, while the U.S. revenue was down 3%. However, half of the international revenue increase was due to the weak dollar.
•Johnson & Johnson, the medical company, reported 7.3% higher international sales, while U.S. sales fell 0.6%. Yet roughly 44% of the international growth was due to currency effects.
•IBM, the computing giant, had first-quarter revenue growth of 8%. It would have been 5% had it not received a currency boost, FactSet says.
The weak dollar has been such a boon for companies, it's a top reason why earnings are beating expectations so handily, says Larry Adam, strategist at Deutsche Bank Private Wealth Management. Companies in the Standard & Poor's 500 get roughly half their revenue from overseas.

Meanwhile, the weak dollar especially helps companies that get growing amounts of revenue from emerging nations, where the dollar stands to continue to erode, Adam says.
If the weak dollar continues and pushes profit higher, companies may feel better about hiring, Van Dijk says.
And that's a distinct possibility given that the dollar is likely to keep losing value because low U.S. interest rates do not support the currency, says Randy Warren of Warren Financial Service. "This is going to continue," he says. "The dollar is in a downward trend."

Translation: Obama's economy policy is a disaster, we MUST find some way to spin it.

In other news, experts say that the all that water from the Titanic sinking eliminated their rat infestation problems.

I'm sorry it was always the downfall of the strong US dollar that it made it impossible to export US products to the world, killing our manufacturing industry. Our dollar has weakened enough to resurge our exports and give our manufacturing sector a second breath.

Yes, when you factor in all the OTHER problems of a weak dollar. You know, all the problems the MSM harped on in 2008 and mysteriously stopped caring about sometime in late January of 2009. I wonder what caused that?

Find me an MSM article pre 2009 touting the advantages of a weak dollar.

Yes that little spike was due to people who were no longer using jobs (not considered apart of the employment stats) now resuming their search for jobs (then considered apart of the employment stats). We've established that in the other thread. Did you even read it or did you ignore it because it debunked your happiness?

Nothing has changed. Call me when unemployment is back where it was before obama fixed everything...You do remember when unemployment was under 8%, don't you? You remember when obama said that it would be disastrous if unemployment exceeded 8% so we need "HIS" stimulus plan to prevent that, right?

Before, oh please, the economy was already falling when obama took over, if the economy was recovering before Obama took over then free fell then I'd agree with you. Remember we're adding 240,000 a month and with summer jobs approaching there will be a bigger spike in employments.

We added 240,000 jobs in only the last month. Call me when it's a trend. In the mean time, lets not play the "BLAME BUSH" song again. obama was not elected because he said he was going to fail. he was hired for the job because he said he could fix it. If you hired a mechanic to fix your car and after trying for 2 years he said that it was worse than he thought, would he still have your car or would you have fired his ass?

Then let me call you and anyone else who believes that jobs magically appear with little job fairies fools. Anyone with a bit of common sense and intelligence knows that repairing the economy takes time. Obama has to maintain the upward trend in hiring while dealing with a deficit. Neither was I blaming bush the economy was falling due to credit and mortgage crisis. though it happened on his watch you could see the seeds when Clinton was president. So to use your analogy it would be giving a car mechanic a total wreck handing him a paper clip and toilet paper and expecting him to fix it.

Name calling, why because you FAILED to read SMAZ post showing the upward trend in the unemployment rate from the bush years to the Obama years, now you're running away from the facts, pick a defense and stick to it. Either you read the #s or you didn't. Simple as that, saying because I generalized people who believe that economies improve overnight as fools, is not name calling. I'm saying that you were keeping your beliefs pie in the sky due to the fact you were IGNORING the stats that SMAZ presented.
