In areas like Georgia, and the Carolinas, they haven't been built into the schedules, as they usually don't need to. They "have" to make up the days lost somehow.Now that it seems that every winter is pounding the southern states with snow, they may have to revamp their scheduling, but until now, it was "global warming" and wasn't necessary. |

There are other reasons to cancel a day of school. School schedules should have extra days built in just for this reason (the material should be coverable in fewer days than they are scheduled). |

I remember the first NY MLK day, I was in high school (I think 1985), and remember it was VERY snowy and icey outside, after having just had a major snowstorm shortly before. I also remember it being one of the coldest days of the winter that year. And as you said, very few were "reflecting" why they had off, they just knew they had a day off. |

I don't think that was MLK Day, it was Super Bowl Sunday. It was probably 1/14. I remember 1/20 specifically because the heat in my apartment went out for a day. Worst day for that to happen, since IIRC the temperature in NYC that day was below zero. It was cold that entire week, though.Watched the 49ers kill the Dolphins in my winter coat. Not fun. |

It wasn't the day "of" the snowstorm, but there was like a foot of ice on a lot of the sidewalks that Monday. And it was SO cold. I remember it well as there was a store on the corner of my old block that was vacant, and no one ever shoveled the snow, so it was a foot thick sheet of ice on the sidewalk.The Superbowl was also a week or two earlier than they are now back then. I think it got pushed up a week or two the season after 9/11/01, and they never pushed it back again. |

IIRC the playoff system was quicker, with the WC teams playing each other for the right to play the top seed (which the Giants did in 1984, beating the Rams, then getting demolished by the 15-1 49ers). |
