I've been working on the release candidate - that should have happened instead of beta2 with the new 8.1 kernel. Unfortunately, Gnome 2.30 is *so* screwed up, I couldn't use it. Been going back and forth with Joe, Igor and Chin to get the bad code fixed and have a build going now with what should be their new fixes. Will be testing it all night. Once it's rock solid (which I don't expect tonight) then we'll go for a RC build which will similarly be released like our betas.

Once I'm *certain* that it's as bulletproof as the old code, then we'll put it out for one lst testing cycle publicly and if it passes, then we'll worry about a formal release. You know how I am about *perfect* and can't guess as to when this new one will be so. And it won't be released until it is, as has always been our custom. Hopefully I'll have a better idea of where we're at later tonight ... FWIW though, no complaints at all on the beta2 we released ... but that's still the older 8.0 code and not the 8.1 ...

Some folks with older machines have reported a few minor adventures, and I don't like minor adventures. :)

Aside from the newest stuff not being ready for prime time, the big hangups right now are broken NVidia and Broadcomm drivers. Dell, Apple and HP used that cheap crap in their machines and so they have to be supported and working properly. Once those are working along with Gnome, then we'll be there.

Imagine being able to go to /b/, click on ANYTHING, and get to go somewhere else without rebuilding your machine? :)

And for those Iranian protesters when the moral police show up, click ... nothing happened here. Heh.

You can actually pop the DVD into a PC with no hard drive and run it. The DVD has the OS, drivers and a curiously extensive selection of application software-- in short all most folks would ever need. Try the beta on a reasonably new BSOD victim, you'll be SOLD!!!

And if the machine HAS a working hard drive, we never touch it at all ... KNOS doesn't need a hard drive, though we'll let you look at it (read-only) if it has one. Great for finding those hidden nasties that Windows hides so well ... that was its original main purpose - finding rootkits.

It's out there in public for any doubters to *USE* and comment upon if they have any doubts ...
