When an African-American takes pride in himself he is proud of being black and it is cause for praise in the media and elsewhere.I'm not the media. Taking pride over pigmentation makes about as much sense as me being proud of my brown (sometime grayish) eyes. The same for Native Americans being proud of being red, or Asian peoples proud of being yellow. When a caucasian, however, says he is proud to be white he is accused of being a racist. it's stupid no matter what race the person is. It doesn't make any sense. I am proud of my Italian-American heritage I'm also of Italian descent and a dual citizen (I lived there for many years and my parents still do). I am proud of Italian's positive achievments (there are many) and ashamed of their negative ones (not as many). I have contributed close to nothing on either count since I was a teenager when I came back to the US, so there is nothing that I can be proud (or ashamed) of in my "Italian persona". I don't put value (or shame) upon myself by what my ancestors did. I take pride (or shame) from what I personally do. I don't pigeonhole myself anymore than I pigeonhole others. I'm somebody from the US who happens to have white pigmentation with brown (sometimes gray) eyes who is of Italian descent. I can only take pride in doing things that make myself and my country better. I have nothing to do with the greatness of Leonardo da Vinci, the disgrace of La Mafia, the heroism of the boys of Iwo Jima or the shame of the Ku Klux Klan, let alone anything white people from Sweden, Russia or Argentina who share my same pigmentation may have done well or wrong. |

Why is it okay for there to be "Black Pride" or "Puerto Rican Day Pride" parades, etc?"Black Pride" or "Puerto Rican Pride" is just as stupid. There's nothing wrong with having music or other cultural festivities from the "Old Country" out of nostalgia, fun or artistic merit and honoring those that came before you but saying "I'm proud to be Puerto Rican because Roberto Clemente was a great ballplayer and class act" or "I'm proud to be Italian because Guglielmo Marconi and Alessandro Volta were great inventors" is totally retarded. On the Fourth of July, I'm GRATEFUL for the brilliant work the Founders did and for the sacrifices of those that fought and supported the Revolution. It makes me proud of THEM while humbling me since I don't measure up to that and probably never will. |

Well SMAZ, we should all be proud of who we are. Look, if a person doesn't like himself he probably can't love someone either. Well being is a positive self image. At least that's what I think. |

Well SMAZ, we should all be proud of who we are. Look, if a person doesn't like himself he probably can't love someone either.Narcisism never brought progress. There is a difference between self-confidence and a positive self-image based on reality and achievement versus artificial and undeserved self-esteem. The former leads to great things. The latter leads to high schools having 50 valedictorians and the let-down those kids will have when they discover that in the real world, they are not what they were led to believe. The latter is a formula for disaster. |
