The Yankees Win! :) |

Posted by Union Turnpike on Tue Aug 31 23:30:28 2010 No, the Yankees still lead the Rays by one game in a tight A.L. East race, and the Red Sox, eight games back, still have a small, tiny chance. But by beating the Athletics 9-3 tonight at the Stadium, the Yankees win their 82d game, and clinch their eightheenth winning season. You have to go back to 1992 for the Yankees' last losing season, and 2000 A.D. has been the lowest season of this run with an 87-74 record.(The Yankees were 70-43, and leading the Orioles by six games on strike day 1994). The Yankees are 82-50 and 44-22 at The Stadium with 30 games remaining. This season is resembling 2008, but with the Yankees and the Red Sox reversed, the Yankees and the Rays battling it out, and the Red Sox chasing them. The Red Sox (74-58) are eight behind the Yankees for the A.L. East and seven behind the Rays (81-51) for the A.L. Wildcard. The Los Angeles Angels at 64-68, I think, are nearly done in the A.L. West and at 17 games behind the Rays are done in the A.L, Wildcard. 2000 A.D. - 2009 was a good decade for the Angels and the best in their team history. Maybe Yankees, Rays, Rangers and Twins or White Sox in the A.L.. N.L. is very tight with at least nine or ten clubs having a mathimatical chance and at least eight or even nine of those teams having a decent chance. The Metropolitans, even at 65-67, are only 8.5 games behind the Phillies for the N.L. Wildcard. Only non-tight race is N.L. Central, where the surprising Reds now find themselves leading the second place Cardinals by seven games. Braves and Reds are 77-55, and the surprising Padres are 76-54. |

The Padres are doing amazing this year for their payroll yet they're barely mentioned on ESPN for some reason. I'm not pulling out the East Coast bias card yet though since Buster Posey and the Giants are mentioned on ESPN frequently. |

If the Rays weren't so good, normally 5-6games back at this point is 'still in it'. But obviously I doubt the Yankees or Rays will slip up much at this time. |

I'm sure the Cubs fans would love to have the entire Rays team replace what they have now. The Rays or Marlins are both pretty good teams, but have no fanbase. |

No, they won't----and you can take that to the bank, and in my Red Sox's case, the blood bank. You might concern yourself with the current pitching of the Yankees, though. They might be vulnerable in the Playoffs if they face the Rays or a tough NL team with solid pitching. Then, again, they have their reputation and it has worked for them in the past. The thing about your team is that you never let up on them if you have them down. You crush them, otherwise they get up and stomp you down. That lesson must be learned by anyone who plays them. |

That the AL West is all but sewn up is great news for the Yankees. They won't have to travel outside of the Central Time Zone until at least the World Series (and then it would have to be a rematch of the 1998 World Series). |
