You know what really grinds my gears? |
|

Posted by Spider-Pig on Mon Aug 30 11:03:05 2010 When a gas station has the big sign visible from the street showing only the CASH prices for gas (credit being higher priced) and it either doesn't say those are cash prices, or it's small and invisible so you only realize after pulling up to the pump. I filled up with 1.5 gallons of gas today at such a station. At an 8¢ price difference, I still saved with credit (w00t for CC bonuses), but I was going back to NJ and only stopped for gas in NY because I didn't have time for full serve. And that reminds me: You know what really grinds my gears? NJ FULL SERVE!There should be a law that requires that either both sets of prices must be posted equally prominently, that the words CASH must be the same size as the prices, or that cash only prices must be in red instead of black. |

NJ FULL SERVE!"If I am not mistaken, NJ kept the law that states all gas stations in NJ must provide FULL SERVE in part for the elderly and handicap individuals. |

"and since New Jersey fuel prices are still way below New York prices .."Here in NYC, we have to pay the city and state tax on gas. NJ does not have that ....YET ....and for years there has been talk of either lowing the tax or eliminating all together..at least that's what Chuck Schumer keeps saying over the years....but it never happens. |

Most people are not elderly and handicapped. Many NY gas stations have one full serve island. In addition, there is IINM a law requiring full serve for the disabled even in an otherwise all self-serve station.Regardless, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one. Those who can't pump their own gas can seek out a station with a full serve island. |

It takes longer for no good reason. The only reason the prices are less is due to tax, not having anything to do with labor. On a number of occasions (including today) I have paid more for gas in NY solely because my time was worth more than the savings. |

There are a few Exxon, Lukoil, and BP stations near here which have the most lackadaisical employees I've ever come across. The Exxon stations in particular suck because they do the Credit/Cash pricing garbage, although they do prominently state the two different prices. I usually hit an Exxon or Wawa station up around Burlington-Mt Holly road off I-295 because the price is a good 10 cents cheaper, it's the same for both payment methods, and the employees are considerably faster. |

There's a Mobil station near me which not only does that cash/credit nonsense (although yes, displayed), they are CONSITENTLY at LEAST 60-80 cents more than any other gas station. I don't know how they get any moronic customers that actually buy gas there, but there's always cars there. I don't understand why ANYONE would patronize them with their gas that much higher. And it's not like it's on a highway, or in some non-competition area either. |

One justification for that is that it brings business to their service station, since people assume that if they sell gas they're more reputable. Or at least that's what it seems to me. They probably just break even with the gas. |
