The driver, Daniel Olimpio, 52, of Stamford, was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, N.Y., after he was stabbed in the chest, stomach and arms as three young black males were getting out of his cab around 7 p.m., police said. Olimpio was listed in fair condition Friday afternoon after having been critical, according to a hospital spokeswoman and police. After Olimpio arrived in Mount Vernon, one of the suspects began to stab him, while another held a gun, said Detective Sgt. Robert Scott of the Mount Vernon Police Department. While police assume robbery was the motive, it is not clear whether anything was taken. Scott said police are still investigating. Mount Vernon police have already been probing a string of taxi cab robberies in the city since July. There have been at least three similar incidents, with suspects getting rides from nearby train stations into Mount Vernon, where they rob victims at gunpoint, Scott said. "We're working on that pretty aggressively and actively," he said. Greenwich police said a number of witnesses remember the suspects attempting to hail a cab in Greenwich. Lt. Richard Cochran, of the Greenwich Police Department, said the three suspects exited a train at the downtown Greenwich train station Thursday evening and approached numerous cab drivers trying to find the cheapest rate to make it to Mount Vernon, N.Y. "One driver agreed to take them to Mount Vernon, at which point he was later found stabbed and in serious critical condition," Cochran said. Greenwich police assisted in the investigation Thursday night, attempting to locate video footage of the men leaving the train station. Police have not been able to locate any video of the suspects so far. According to Scott, the suspects are described as being approximately 18 years old and about 5-foot-11. One was wearing a gray shirt and blue jeans, while another was dressed in blue jeans, a white shirt with a red stripe on one of the sleeves and a Yankees hat. There was no description of the clothing the third suspect was wearing. Juliano Abadia, the Greenwich Taxi night dispatcher who was on duty Thursday, said that around 7:20 p.m. he got a call from a woman in Mount Vernon who had found Olimpio after the stabbing, and had called the police and an ambulance, as well as the phone number on the taxi. Abadia said he went straight to the hospital, where Olimpio was undergoing surgery. Olimpio is an independent contractor who leases the license plates from the company, and has been driving as a franchisee for close to 10 years. No phone number is listed for the cab driver's Stamford address. No one answered the door at his Myano Lane home Friday afternoon. Buddy Boskello, the owner of Greenwich Taxi, said Olimpio, who has two young children and made his own hours, was cooperative. "He was someone we'd want as an independent contractor representing the company," Boskello said. "I was very anxious to make sure he was OK." Boskello, a Pemberwick resident who has been with the company for 40 years, said this was the first robbery of a Greenwich Taxi driver since the 1970s. Abadia said the cab drivers had not been aware of the previous robberies in Mount Vernon, which isn't a common destination for Greenwich Taxi drivers. After one of the drivers the suspects were trying to negotiate with told them they had to take the first car in line at the station, Abadia said he advised Olimpio to get the $54 fare up front. "Everybody's scared," said Abadia, who, like Olimpio, is a native of Brazil. "We just couldn't believe that would have happened to someone like him." Scott said police are warning taxi drivers in the area to be cautious, especially if there are several young men at one time looking for a ride. |

Investigators with the New York City Police Department say it all began Monday night when a 21-year-old man hailed a cab at 24th Street and Second Avenue in Manhattan. Police say the passenger asked the driver, "Are you Muslim?" When the driver said yes the passenger pulled a knife and slashed him in the throat, arm and lip. The 43-year-old driver was able to lock the passenger in the back of the cab and call 911. Both the driver and the passenger were taken to Bellevue Hospital. As of late Tuesday, no charges had been filed. --- I'll have to guess that they don't have any editors ... |

What legitimate reason did the suspect in this case have to stab the cabbie? The NYPD has it out of the suspect's own mouth that he did not attack the cabbie until the cabbie confirmed that he was, in fact, a Muslim. |
