I mean, the Yankees were playing the Phillies....why in God's name would Mets fans want the PHILLIES to win? That would be like me standing around watching a World Series with the Red Sox and the Mets, and wanting the Red Sox to win!

Yep, George ran the Yankees in a staunch Republican way, spending big time and getting the best talent available by paying the biggest salaries. He paid 10 million for the frnachise which is now worth over a billion! That's what I call building a business the capitalist way!

So "spending big time" is Republican now? ;)

Actually, I don't understand why any liberals even root for the Yanks. My excuse is that I became a fan at age 7 before I had any kind of political philosphy.

Mine is I'm from Red Sawx territory.

Except for geography, I don't think there's any "liberal" or "conservative" distinction among baseball teams.

What's the Red Sox payroll. And the Mets. Two other high paid teams.

$122 million and $149 million, respectively, versus the Yankees' $201 million.

2009 payrolls

Note that the 2008 Rays won the AL pennant with a payroll of $44 million.

You root for your league, in this case, National, when the series is played or the All Star Game.

Bull-CRAP! If it was the Mets playing the Red Sox or the Angels, there is no way in HELL I would be rooting for the Red Sox! I don't understand you wanting the Mets big rival, the Phillies to win!

Another example, I am a Jets fan.... I was screaming "Go Giants" the whole superbowl when they were playing the Patriots. No way I am rooting for the Patriots (or Buffalo or Miami for that matter). That would be as absurd as a Giants fan rooting for the Eagles or the Cowboys.

Of course, they just played a game against eachother.

I think most Yankee Fans wish the Mets bad fortune.I think you are in the minority.

Many Mets fans do the opposite too. But I have been to subway series games (not world series) between the Mets and the Yankees, and sure, there's the normal razzing you get with any game, but I don't see it any worse than when they play against any other teams. Fans are ALWAYS going to make fun of the fans of the team they are playing against.

I am a Jets fan also and somehow don't have the antipathy towards the Giants as I do the Yanks.I'd love to see the Jets and Giants in a Superbowl but it doesn't look good for this year.

Heh, for either.... They both started sort of gangbusters, and one after the other fell apart. The Jets are, well "just the Jets", and do what they always do... :) --- They do stuff like beating New England, but then lose to teams like the Bills. Go figure.
The Giants had a cushy schedule at the beginning, and now they are playing tougher teams. For example, I think they are playing San Diego this week....I wouldn't touch that game with a 10 foot pole....
At least the Jets CAN NOT lose this week!

Horrible? Depends on who you ask.

If you're the Yankees, I guess it was an unsuccessful decade, yes.

If you're anyone else, making it to two World Series, an ALCS and seven straight playoff appearances would be a dream come true.

For example, in their 45 year history, the Mets have been to the playoffs a TOTAL of seven times ('69, '73, '86, '88, '99, '00 and '06). That means the Yankees have been to the playoffs as many times between 2001 and 2007 as many times as the Mets have since 1962.

I would grab the Yankees' 2001-2009 decade with both hands, believe me.

Silly. You always look like a genius when you win and a doofus when you don't. Cashman is no genius; hd has so much money at his disposal, he can use the "throw it at the wall and hope it sticks" method of player acquisition. Of course, the Yankees have so much money that they can afford to make huge money mistakes that would cripple other teams.

Tell me, was Cashman a genius when he traded for or signed these guys?

Randy Johnson
Carl Pavano
Jaret Wright
Kevin Brown
Kyle Farnsworth
Sidney Ponson
Kei Igawa
Gary Sheffield
Jason Giambi
Rondell White
Raul Mondesi
Cory Lidle
Ruben Sierra
Kenny Lofton

and a host of others from 2001 through this year? Of course not - he didn't win.

The non-Pinstriped truth (that is, the truth in the real world) is that on any other ballclub, Cashman would have lost his GM job long long ago for spending the money he spent on stiffs like Pavano and Igawa and not winning a thing.

Don't call Cashman a genius. A genius is someone who can win a title with a $50 million payroll like the '03 Marlins. Not someone who's spent a billion-and-a-half dollars in seven years and got one title.

How are they supposed to hold onto them? By locking them in a room? When the talented small-market team players (and their agents) know that if they go free agency, big spenders like the Yankees, Mets, Red Sox and others will blow them away with multi-year megadeals, why would they stay where they are and accept less money? How is someone in Kansas City or Cincinnati supposed to hold on to a homegrown player if the Yankees want him? Make him part-owner of the club?

You are making the wrong argument, so I will make the right one for you.

The Yankees have a lot of money. There's no question about that. The league allows them to spend as much as they want on free agents as long as they pay the luxury tax and other fees that amount to chump change for the Yankees. There is no hard cap. So, the Yankees spend as much as they want and need to, as long as they are playing within the rules, which they are.

Ah, but its not fair, you say? No, its not fair. But the Yankees are not under any moral obligation to spend less money to give other teams a chance to compete. They are in the business of making money and winning titles (in that order) and they will spend as much as they need to in order to accomplish that. If other teams don't have that kind of money, oh well, too bad, maybe next life. If you don't like, get the league and the players union to agree to a hard cap. Good luck with that, as they say.

Now given all of the above, my objection to the Yankees and especially their fans is not that they spend money - they are allowed and in fact entitled to spend as much as they need to. Its that they refuse to admit that they spend a ton of money and buy a rosterful of stars that no one else can dream of buying. They refuse to admit that without the deep pockets, the Yankees would not have 27 titles. They'd have maybe 22 (the 20 from before expansion and the two from '77 and '78). A small but significant difference.

The Yankees are a very clever marketing outfit, I will give them that. They market the current teams as if they were the legitimate heirs of the Yankee teams of the '20s and '30s - teams built through great scouting and great trades. The truth is, these Yankees, and most other ML players, are just mercenaries who love the Bronx because it spells monetary security for them and their families for generations. Not because Babe Ruth played here 80 years ago.

No question about it, the Mets spend a lot too, and badly.

That's completely irrelevant, however.

I am not talking about those years. If you read my post carefully, I am only talking about 2001 through 2008.

The teams you refer to were great teams, no question, and they had no superstars. The best players were homegrown (except for Cone, Key, Clemens, et al). Money was not an issue with those teams. But around 2000, George started to poke his nose back into the scene and the money rained down in torrents.

You're a Yankee fan, let me ask you this: of which championship team in the 1996 and later era are you the most proud?

If it were me, I'd say the '98 team followed by the '96 team.

Again, I am not talking about those years. The Yankees' spending was not out of control then. No question about that. I am only talking about from 2001 on.

I never said he was a genius for everything, I said he was a genius in not making the trade. God you are being so damn irrational. Go back and sulk about your own damn team.

Maybe if your mets spent a bit more for the 3 players I keep mentioning, your team would not have fucked up this badly this year. Blame Omar and the Coupons.

Why does what the Mets do justify what the Yankees do? If I say the Mets should also not be allowed to spend $149 million, will you admit that I am right? Or is it only the Mets who aren't allowed to spend money?

You sound like an Obama-ite. Anything anyone says against him is tarred and feathered as a racist and a hater.

You just don't want to acknowledge the documented truth. The Yankees bought this one. Period.
