Ah, but that's what makes the Yankees so great for baseball! The hatred they generate packs stadiums across the country because people want to see them lose.It also packs Yankee Stadium because Yankee Fans hate to lose. The Yanks were beat up on for 9 years, an eternity for a Yankee Fan without a World Series Trophy.Teams had the pleasure of beating them in the Series or playoffs all that time, so what has happened is only right.Besides, the Yankee 'hate-ability index" for non Yankee fans plunged to new lows after last year and had to be restored full measure. It sure has now! |

You people don't get it: 2002, 2004-8 They didn't get to the WS and they had the highest payroll. So money doesn't = championships. Plus if other teams like the Pirates actually took the money from the Yankees [via revenue tax], they could be competitive as well. |

Agreed. The biggest mistake made by Minaya was staying with Delgado after the good season he had last year.He was aging and could have been traded and we could have maybe gotten Texeira. When you guys got him, I knew you were going to the World Series. Also, Minaya gave a big three year contract to Luis Castillo, another aging wreck.Remember how he choked on that simple fly ball in that Yankee game in June. But that's why the Yanks won. They had smart general management with Cashman. Also, the young Steinbrenner was smart to go all out for A Rod.He's the man who produces all year. Anyhoo, I, as a Met Fan, realize we only get to a World Series every 15 years or so.It's been that way since I've been rooting since 1962. One thing you'll never experience as a Yankee Fan, though, is the feeling we got in 1969.You guys are always expecting excellence and generally get it, but winning that series in '69 after all the crap years from '62-'68 was absolutely "Amazin'". Congrats to you and your team and enjoy the parade tomorrow.Good for New York, it needs a boost after a tough economic year! |

Castillo was a big mistake, who would give that guy a 4 year extension? And of course because they kept him, they had to pass on a guy who WANTED TO PLAY FOR THE METS, Hudson. And if the Mets just bought out Delgado's contract, they could've gotten Dunn to fill in at first and he would've at least got a few more homers than Delgado. Ibanez would've been a major upgrade over Murphy[who is not a natural OF, but an IF]. Those 3 changes could've gone a long way. And again I'm speaking as a Yankees fan. |

"Beat up on"???From 2001 through 2007, the Yankees performed as follows: 2001: Lost in the World Series 2002: Lost in the ALDS 2003: Lost in the World Series 2004: Lost in the ALCS 2005: Lost in the ALDS 2006: Lost in the ALDS 2007: Lost in the ALDS They had a legit shot to win titles every one of these years. Don't tell me that they were beat up on. Tampa lost 90+ games in each of those years. THEY were beat up on. |

Because Tampa didn't spend to improve their teams and in 2008, they finally got great players from the 'lottery' for all those last place finishes.Yes, the yankees with all they spent should've done better, but they were beaten up. 2004 and 2005 went to the final game of the respective series and they could've advanced to the next round, but they didn't. |

However, they did not win a World Series for all those years. To a Yankee Fan, ALDS or ALCS means nothing.A World Series victory is all that matters. My point is that for causing the most annoyance and heartbreak to a Yankee Fan, they have to not win a World Series. That's what I meant by "beat up on". |

In 2004 if not for Ortiz, they could've been in the WS. In 2005, if not for Sheffield crashing into Crosby for the ball, they might've beaten the Angels and advanced to the AlCS. It was devestating losing those series. |

(Re: THE YANKEES ARE CHAMPIONS OF BASEBALL!), posted by Grand Concourse on Thu Nov 5 16:42:56 2009. $1,578,299,197.According to USA Today, that's how much the Yankees spent in salary from the beginning of 2001 to the end of 2009. Over one-and-a-half billion dollars. No, they didn't win the WS in any year between 2001 and 2009, but they sure spent big bucks in each of those years, didn't they? You simply can't make the argument that since the Yankees didn't win the WS from 2001 to 2008, its OK that they spent over a billion dollars trying. The ends don't justify the means. The Yankees just didn't get what they paid for during those years, but they should not have been allowed to spend that much in the first place. There is something fundamentally wrong with a league when one team is allowed to spend over a billion dollars on players, whether they win or not. There definitely should be a salary cap and salary floor. Nobody, not the Yankees, the Mets, the Red Sox or anyoneThen and only then will there be competitive balance, like in the NFL. |

LOL!I was just going to say the same thing. In the persuit of excellence, the Yankees had to spend.Hey, we spent tons of money but the Mets crapped out.I think LA and Boston have big payrolls too. Still, I do beleive the small cities need some sort of way to compete.Maybe some rule that staes a rookie from that cities farm system must stay with that city 5 years after he breaks into the majors.I guess the players union would put the kibosh on that one. |

Maybe what should be done is to force owners to invest in their team only [using the luxury tax money] than to just line their own pockets. Then they can keep their players a bit longer than to have to give them up.Don't blame the yankees for spending to win. Blame the other owners that uses their teams to line their pockets. |

This all got out of control years ago when that guy from Oakland was spending big on players.Salaries went through the roof.I saw an old newsreel years ago on Ebbet's Field and they followed some of the '55 Dodgers.A lot of those guys worked in the off season in the hardware store, delivering groceries or at drug stores! And year after year, they came back to that same team. I was a Yankee Fan from 1960 to 1962 when the Mets were organized ( my NY Giants Baseball parents forced my to abdicate my Yankee affiliation and become a Met Fan or lose tv rights).I can still recite the Yankee lineup from '61, Hector Lopez in left, Mantle center, Maris right, Clete Boyer third, Tony Kubek short, Bobby Richardson second, Moose Skowron first, Whitey Ford pitching and Yogi Berra or Elston Howard catching.Same guys all the time. |

Boston Red Sox are also a huge draw here in Tampa. Keep in mind, the Yankees have a long history here in Tampa, to the point that they were the home team for decades. Steinbrenner lives here, has a stadium named after him which is where spring training takes place, and 1/2 of Pinellas and Pasco counties lived in the northeast at one point. |

He hasn't started a game in over a month and pitched just one inning this postseason. It looks like Girardi made the right call. B7 flying. |

Maybe what should be done is to force owners to invest in their team only [using the luxury tax money] than to just line their own pockets.EXACTLY!! Greedy owners have used the money to line their own pockets instead of building up their teams. It's a scam. |
