Obama was in Newark and Camden today. That Continental Connection plane is the same model that crashed in Buffalo. Star Alliance paint scheme makes it look like a discount airline. |

I like the classic livery even though the airplane has those engines that appear to be smashed off on the bottom - someone here mentioned last week that there is a reason for it. I forget but I think the person explained that if the wind pushes the wing down during takeoff or especially landing the bottom of the engine will not smack into the ground and possibly break the wing off or cause significant structural damage. Anyway, I have seen US Airways and Air Canada airplanes painted like that and I assume there are others out there. |

Ugh.I saw an Air Canada jet at Tampa International on Saturday night. He was sitting off to the side with the stairs open to the rear of the plane. Ten minutes later, they closed up, and he took off. I thought it was a charter. |

Yeah, those winglets are an accident waiting to happen - I avoid those airplanes like the plague. I was following up on the story about a Tampa man who took a machete to his wife last evening when I noticed TampaBay.com has a "Mugshot" section just like Newsday. Unlike Newday, it costs nothing to look at the mugshots. Crime is my favorite part of the newspaper even more than sports. |

Never mind the winglets - look closely at this picture. It appears pieces of the engine are missing and probably fell off during turbulence or a hard landing. Unbelievable.

Never leave home without a camera. You don't know what you might find.I've been on a Q400 before for Colgan Air d/b/a Continental Connection. The planes are pretty nice on the inside: lots of headroom and smooth lines for the baggage compartments. But the fact that one of these went down in Clarence Center, NY makes me a bit leery about taking them in the cold climes of the Northeast. I was on a Q200 last night on CommutAir d/b/a Continental Connection. ![]() I took that picture in May, but it's the same type of aircraft. When they start the props up on that thing, the whole plane shakes, but it's smooth once it starts rolling. Like the Q400, the Q200 has quite a lot of headroom for such a small plane, and, discounting the fact that it's a propeller plane, is significantly more comfortable than an Embraer Regional Jet. And considering my other option on the flight is a Saab 340B (2x1 seating with no headroom), I'll gladly take Continental! |

From Wikipedia: "Engines on the 737 Classic series (300, 400, 500) and Next-Generation series (600, 700, 800, 900) appear not to have circular inlets, as most aircraft do. The accessory gearbox was moved from the 6 o'clock position under the engine to the 4 o'clock position (forward looking aft). This was done because the 737 sits lower to the ground than most airliners and the original 737s were designed for small P&W engines, but additional ground clearance was needed for the larger CFM56 engines. This side-mounted gearbox gives the engine a somewhat triangular rounded shape. Because the engine is close to the ground, 737-300s and later are more prone to engine foreign-object damage (FOD)." |
