The trend during Ford's administration had been halted. It had reversed in the first year of Carter, but made very little headroom over the duration other than it didn't get worse. Inflation and interest rates had been out of hand since Nixon, and we went back into a major recession once Reagan came in as well ... Carter DID make a slight dent in it, the only one who had managed into 1980. |

Fred, no one blames anybody for voting for Carter.I have nothing against the man, he is a good person.He made some bad foreign policy decisions and the economy turned sour as well.Presidents are the victims or the beneficiaries of Federal Reserve interest rate policy.I remember Ford wearing that Whip Inflation Now button.It didn't do any good as inflation took off after he left office. |

We had a local beer distributor bring in the stuff which we did as prizes for our listeners. And of course we made hay out of the connection with a few ID's. Dunno if you ever tried the stuff, but it was the worst swill EVER. The plant which made it now makes Miller, Fosters Lager and other swills. |

What exactly is the problem here? Rich paints Scozzafava's heresies as minor. But suppose this was a solidly Democratic district, and party bosses put forward an anti-stimulus, anti-abortion, anti-gay rights nominee. Would Rich really oppose a liberal campaign to elect a more like-minded representative? Would he employ such virtiolic metaphors? There's a lesson here about making a moral cause out of a procedural argument you're not prepared to back in opposite circumstances. |

Controlling interest and editorial control of New Republic is currently in the hands of the Fraser Institute, a libertarian think tank.
