On Parade |
|
|
Posted by JayZeeBMT on Mon Jun 29 19:06:45 2009 ![]() ![]() Here I go marching in the NYC Heritage Of Pride March with the NYC Council. That's your Council Speaker, Christine Quinn (D-Chelsea) next to me. We had a real blast, marching down Fifth Avenue to 8th Street, then onto Christopher Street and past the Stonewall Inn, where it all began 40 years ago. Governor Paterson, Mayor Bloomberg, and Comptroller DiNapoli also marched. I am forever making posts here on SubChat, I thought you guys might like to see that I put my politics right out there on the streets, too...lol! It was a great day, but when I went home, I could hardly walk anymore...but Speaker Quinn is a classy lady. She was enthusiastic, sweet, and we even did an impromptu mambo during one of the many pauses in the march! |

Paterson & Mayor Bloomberg. When we reached Greenwich/10th they put me in a car for a presser & photo shoot at the Pier. But you're right, many marchers were interesting and eye-catching. There was lots of "eye candy" keeping my head on a swivel all day long...lol! |

While the original photos are just what could win people over, the "interesting" ones from the subsequent post just enlivens every bad stereotype there is, and does nothing to win over the masses, in fact, it probably does way more damage. |

The gays are mostly, but not entirely at the gay end of Bourbon Street. I don't think that Mardi Gras is a celebration of sexuality, much less gay sexuality, like most gay pride events seem to be. |

Posted by JayZeeBMT on Tue Jun 30 23:46:21 2009, in response to Re: On Parade, posted by Easy on Tue Jun 30 23:09:12 2009. The NYC Heritage Of Pride March is much less a "celebration of sexuality" than it is a statement of solidarity. This is why it is called a "March" instead of a "Parade". In the early years of this annual event, it was a protest march against anti-gay bigotry and anti-gay laws (for example, it used to be against the law for any bar or restaurant licensed by the NYS Liquor Authority to serve alcohol to ANY openly gay patron, period. The Stonewall Inn was raided on the night of the Rebellion to enforce that very law), and today the March continues to focus on equality for the LGBT community. It is also a day to be out and proud, and that's why you see such colorful displays of sexuality and gay culture. But it is still primarily a political event. |

Holding the banner actually made it easy to keep up with the Council sergeants-at-arms (the man and woman at either end of the banner) who set the pace. But it was a BLAST!Nothing like appearing before hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers on a beautiful summer Sunday. :) |
