Developer Drops Gehry’s Design for Brooklyn Arena |
|
|
Posted by Spider-Pig on Thu Jun 4 20:48:33 2009 TimesSo this is what the NIMBYs at Develop don't, Destroy Brooklyn (comma added by me for more accuracy) got for their trouble. They delayed it long enough so that the economy went south and now instead of a beautiful Gehry-designed structure everyone can be proud of, it's going to be a glorified hangar. thanks NIMBYS! |

You have to wonder how well this venue would've done in Brooklyn. They would've been in a position where they needed to steal a percentage of concert and circus dates from MSG.Without two full-time teams(NBA, NHL), it's hard to justify the cost of a new venue. |

They would also steal events from the Nassau Colosseum and would take over all of the events from the Izod Center, although that might still be around.Given all of the tax breaks it has, I'm sure it can be just as profitable as other NBA-only or for that matter NHL-only venues in other cities. |

In other smaller cities, it's cheaper to maintain an NHL or NBA-only venue. You can have an NHL-only in Tampa or NBA-only in Orlando. In a NY, Philly, LA, or Boston, it's less likely, but possible. You're right about Nassau Coliseum. They would've lost a few dates. Mainly some concerts. Family shows would still go to Nassau and Izod Center to serve those counties. |

They have lots of concerts, but I don't think that they make a lot of money.Staples has two NBA teams plus an NHL team. They often have basketball and hockey games on the same day. Or two basketball games on the same day. Add in all of their concerts and they have to be the busiest and most successful indoor arena in the country, if not the world. |

I think Ringling even went to LA Sports Arena to get a string of dates they were unable to get at Staples. LA Sports Arena most likely offered favorable rent/merch terms as well.Had either NBA team not gone to the Staples Center, it would've put a dent in their budget. I'm sure the Honda Center hoped they'd attract and NBA team. We need more mid-sized venues like The Orleans in Vegas. |

Venues are almost always built in hopes of having at least two major league tenants. Especially in bigger cities. In a smaller market like Buffalo or Wilkes-Barre, or Fresno(Savemart Center), they know that they have to take what they can get. Many people thought MMA would be big in LA/Orange County, but it's doing better in San Jose and Sacramento, which is not good for Staples and Honda. |

Not sure what number UFC it was, but they've done both Anaheim and Staples Center. Affliction has been doing Honda Center, so UFC won't run there. |

The Sports Arena is wide open now that USC basketball (men and women) play in their own arena (the Galen Center) about a mile north at Figueroa & Jefferson. I think when the Clippers and USC were still at the Sports Arena, the priority was Circus/USC/Clippers, though I could be wrong. |

What then is the status of the Nets move to Brooklyn? I read that they are in financial trouble and may be convinced to move to Newark. What's going on here behind the scenes? |

And the area will be a blighted eyesore for decades to come.Ugly to see a homeless shelter inside an amory at Bedford/Atlantic with all the drug addicts hanging out, making it difficult for residents living in the area. These asshole NIMBYs don't want an multi-purpose sporting arena, but they don't say anything about the conditions along the LIRR/south side of Atlantic Ave. When someone out there is laid off from their job, they could have said ". . well I could have used a job at that Nets arena once it opens." |

I see Forest City Enterprises putting the team up for sale soon; the team is losing too much money...and the team then moving to the very accessible Prudential Center. |
