Hmm. If you're not going to continue Bush-era policies (and this is one of the worst errors of that era), then be in earnest about it.

Clinton says Iran to be invited to regional conference on Afghanistan

BRUSSELS, March 5 (KUNA) — US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said here Thursday that she proposed at the meeting of NATO foreign ministers to hold a high-level regional conference on Afghanistan with the participation of all stakeholders.

Hillary told a news conference here this evening that she presented the idea of calling a "big tent" meeting on Afghanistan with the participation of the US, NATO members, donor countries, state providing troops to ISAF, neighbouring countries and international organizations but no decision has been taken as yet.

"If we go forward with such a meeting, Iran will be invited as a neighbor of Afghanistan," said Hillary in her first appearance at a NATO meeting as Secretary of State.

She said that in the border regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan "we face a common threat and a common challenge", adding that the US is working to complete a strategic review on the way forward in Afghanistan.

Clinton also welcomed the decision of the Czech Republic and Poland to proceed with the installation of the missile shields on their territories saying that Europe faced threats from regimes like in Iran and from terrorist groups.

Referring to the status of Iran's nuclear program, she said there is no credibility in their intention.

"Our task is to persuade them, to deter them, to prevent them from acquiring nuclear weapons which given the range of missiles they have currently access to, threatens Europe and Arab nations in the Gulf, not the US, " she noted.

Clinton supported the decision of NATO foreign ministers to resume contacts with Russia saying there are benefits for both sides like cooperating in nuclear non-proliferation, fight against terrorism and piracy.

She underlined the US commitment to strengthen transatlantic relations and cooperation.

Is this the same Iran that they said last week were supplying the Taleban once again?

Sure, if there is a "once again" (which implies a break in such support and supplies). People do act like there's more than one Iran, don't they?

More from the Wall Street Journal . . . the Supreme Leader is still equating Obama with Bush.

U.S. Sets Stage to Meet Iran at Afghanistan Summit

By JAY SOLOMON
BRUSSELS — The U.S. proposed a United Nations-led conference on Afghanistan on March 31 that would provide a forum for the first meeting between President Barack Obama's foreign-policy team and Iran's leadership.

Mr. Obama has stressed his desire to open a dialogue with Tehran in an effort to end its nuclear program and develop cooperation in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton formally proposed the Afghanistan conference at a meeting of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's foreign ministers in Brussels Thursday.

"It is expected that Iran would be invited as a neighbor of Afghanistan," Mrs. Clinton said.

Mrs. Clinton has said Iran could play an important role in stabilizing Kabul's government and cutting off the flow of arms and narcotics into and out of the country.

"Where it is appropriate and useful for the United States and others to see whether Iran can be constructive, that will be considered," Mrs. Clinton told reporters Wednesday.

Since Mr. Obama's election, Iran's leadership has offered conflicting signals on its desire for engagement with the U.S.

Senior Iranian officials have said they welcome such a dialogue, with conditions.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei told a gathering in Tehran Wednesday the Obama administration's foreign policy "amounts to the same crooked ways of the Bush administration and nothing else."

Iran has been among the primary topics Mrs. Clinton discussed during her tour of the Middle East and Europe this week.

U.S. officials said the Afghanistan conference would likely be held in the Netherlands, and include aid donors, international bodies, and Iran's neighbors.

"We hope that this meeting could provide an opportunity to reach a common set of principles … on a common way forward," Mrs. Clinton said Thursday.
