I drove through there back in 2004.Have you ever done the drive down the Pacific Coast Highway? I made that trip that year as well. I spent 3 weeks in California that summer. Went to a wedding in Oakland, rented a car and drove down the PCH to San Diego to visit my brother-in-law. That was a FANTASTIC trip. One of the best vacations I ever had. |

Looking at the data for Georgia: Talbot, Stewart, Quitman, Randolph, Clay, Calhoun, Dooly, Macon*, Hancock**, Taliaferro, Warren, and Jefferson counties. And that's excluding Sumter, Peach, Baldwin, and Washington counties that are only in the vaguest sense urban.* Not to be confused with the city of Macon, which is in Bibb County. Interestingly enough, Oglethorpe, the county seat of Macon County, is massively shrunken from its peak. ** This result was IMMENSE. And the juxtaposition to Glascock County, one of McCain's strongest in Georgia, just makes it look even stranger. |

The next time that you're in Long Beach you should try heading across the Vincent Thomas Bridge to San Pedro and drive around Palos Verdes, Portuguese Bend, etc. along the coast if you haven't done that already. I've found this article, which gives:TX +4 AZ, FL +2 GA, OR, NC, NV, SC, UT +1 CA, IA, IL, LA, MA, MI, MO, MN, NJ, PA -1 OH, NY -2 The effect of which would be (based on the 2008 result, presuming that John McCain has indeed won MO) a net gain of seven electors for the GOP. That might become eight if the law gets changed in Nebraska to stop Obamaha ever happening again. It's hardly a massive shift. What might be interesting would be if all states used the present Nebraska system -- the election would have been a lot closer. |

My b-i-l has told us he's putting his condo in La Jolla on the market. It looks like we're losing our free accomodations. :-( We'll really miss going to SoCal.I would like our next California vacation to be Carmel/Monterrey. We made an overnight stop in Carmel during our drive down the PCH. Didn't really get to spend enough time in that area and I would like to spend more time at Hearst Castle. We took the introductory tour and didn't come close to seeing the entire mansion. |

We stayed in Carmel the first night. It's a very nice little town. The next day, a stop at Nepenthe (an old hippie hangout on the mountain with an AWESOME VIEW) in Big Sur for lunch, a tour of Hearst Castle and we stayed in San Luis Obispo the second night. That stop wasn't necessary as it was close enough to our third night's stopover, Santa Barbara, another cool place.I remember we got lost south of SLO. The road isn't well marked and we ended up going through the town of Guadalupe. We passed through a lot of farmland (looked like grapes were being raised around that area). We got to see an area we never would have seen from Route 1. Eventually we found our way back to the PCH north of Santa Barbara, where it becomes US 101, IIRC. We set aside 3 days to travel from San Francisco to San Diego along the PCH. Had we not planned to stop at Hearst Castle, we could have eliminated the stop in San Luis Obispo and just stayed in Carmel and Santa Barbara. But I don't regret it and hope to make the drive again one day, maybe going south to north this time. Also, make sure you don't have to stop for gas at the one gas station in Big Sur. In 2004 they were already charging $3.17 a gallon for regular when most gas stations in CA. were charging $2.17. They said they get a delivery only once a week due to being in the middle of nowhere |

If you went through Guadalupe you went the right way.I like that area too. The beaches just south of Pismo are ridiculously wide. Almost a mile in some spots. Usually a half mile. There's a hotel called the Madonna Inn just south of SLO that supposedly has really elaborate urinals. I've been to the area many times, but never stopped in. They're supposed to be something special and worth holding it in for a few miles. SLO is a pretty cool college town. I've stopped at Hearst Castle twice, but never had a reservation for a tour so I've only seen the movies and stuff up front. I've been to Big Sur. It's okay. There are so many spots like that in California (and better), I'm not sure why it's so famous. I also like to stop at Morro Bay when I drive that route. I find it cool for some reason. |

That's the only fault I see with the EC. I like the EC, however, the one thing I see wrong is that no matter how much or little a candidate wins a state, it's weighed the same, and winner takes all. For example, it doesn't matter if a candidate wins the state by 51 to 49 (as some states were), or 80 to 20. |
