Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews Fired for Being Politically Biased

Ahh, yes, the backlash has begun on the extreme bias that has been going on in the media. And people really think the media isn't biased....
At least NBC finally realized that their MSNBC was out of control, as they were. I couldn't even watch it lately, and there has been a severe backlash against it.
The last week with Palin clintched it.

MSNBC Drops Olbermann, Matthews as News Anchors

By Howard Kurtz
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, September 8, 2008; C01

MSNBC is removing Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews as the anchors of live political events, bowing to growing criticism that they are too opinionated to be seen as neutral in the heat of the presidential campaign.

David Gregory, the NBC newsman and White House correspondent who also hosts a program on MSNBC, will take over during such events as this fall's presidential and vice presidential debates and election night.

The move, confirmed by spokesmen for both networks, follows increasingly loud complaints about Olbermann's anchor role at the Democratic and Republican conventions. Olbermann, who regularly assails President Bush and GOP nominee John McCain on his "Countdown" program, was effusive in praising the acceptance speech of Democratic nominee Barack Obama. He drew flak Thursday when the Republicans played a video that included a tribute to the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks, saying that if the networks had done that, "we would be rightly eviscerated at all quarters, perhaps by the Republican Party itself, for exploiting the memories of the dead, and perhaps even for trying to evoke that pain again. If you reacted to that videotape the way I did, I apologize."

Matthews, who has criticized politicians in both parties, drew less criticism for his convention role but became a divisive figure during the primaries when he described how he was inspired by Obama's speeches and made disparaging remarks about Hillary Clinton, for which he later apologized.

In May, MSNBC President Phil Griffin said in an interview that during live events Olbermann and Matthews "put on different hats. I think the audience gets it. . . . I see zero problem."

But NBC News journalists, who often appear on the cable channel, did see a problem, arguing behind the scenes that MSNBC's move to the left -- which includes a new show, debuting tonight, for Air America radio host Rachel Maddow -- was tarnishing their reputation for fairness. Tom Brokaw, the interim host of "Meet the Press," said that at times Olbermann and Matthews went too far.

Olbermann and Matthews will remain as analysts during major political events, and officials at both networks, who declined to be identified discussing personnel moves, said Olbermann had initiated the discussions to clarify his role. They said Olbermann's influence at MSNBC would in no way be diminished and that the shift would enable him and Matthews to offer more candid analysis during live coverage. Olbermann confirmed yesterday he had initiated the discussions.

"Phil and I have debated this set-up since late winter/early spring (with me saying, 'Are you sure this flies?' and him saying, 'Yes, but let's judge it event by event') and I think we both reached the same point during the RNC," Olbermann said by e-mail.

Olbermann was involved in several on-air incidents during the conventions that drew unwanted attention. He told morning host Joe Scarborough, a former Republican congressman, to "get a shovel" as Scarborough was defending the McCain campaign. And when GOP strategist Mike Murphy was debating Matthews, Olbermann could be heard saying, "Let's wrap him up."

These and other clashes fueled a sense that conservative voices are less than welcome at MSNBC as it has tried to position itself as a left-wing alternative to Fox News Channel. Olbermann disputes this view, calling the incidents "overblown." Still, the network canceled Tucker Carlson's show in March and has diminished his role. And Dan Abrams, the veteran NBC legal analyst and former MSNBC general manager, had his program dropped last month to make room for Maddow, an Olbermann protege.

MSNBC's more liberal outlook has boosted its ratings, though it remains the third-place cable news channel. But both parties began castigating its coverage last spring. Steve Schmidt, McCain's top strategist, called the network "an organ of the Democratic National Committee," and Clinton campaign chairman Terry McAuliffe said Matthews was "in the tank" for Obama.

Yeah, they were fired as anchors, but I think they can still commentate. But of course a commentator is supposed to be different than an anchor. A commentator can give opinion. An anchor is supposed to be unbiased, and neither of them were unbiased by any stretch of the immagination. The only preople that couldn't see they were biased were people that agreed with their views. There are people that are so enmassed in partisanism that they can't even see how biased they were.

I most certainly do. In fact, when he and Dan Patrick were on SportsCenter, I considered that must-see TV. He and Patrick by far were the most entertaining tandem in ESPN's lineup in those days.

Unfortunately, Olbermann began to think of himself as something more than a sports talkie and convinced a ratings-challenged network like MSNBC that he was as skilled a political analyst as he was a sports analyst. His ego took it from there.

The same thing is occurring right now with the NY Daily News' Mike Lupica. He's a long-time sports editor at the News but who has recently becoming more and more political.

That's true of all TV news. The stories are researched and written often by reporters. The fact that they hire an idiot with blonde hair and big breasts doesn't change the news itself.

"I get my news from the blogs. They are the most honest."

Maybe and maybe not. It depends who is writing them. Blogs can be a great source of early news tip-offs, or just ignorant drivel written by people with hidden agendas or even less of a clue than the TV anchors.

Also, TV stations select news that's visually appealing to a mass audience. Blogs can afford to cover things not intended for a general audience.

Fox News is very balanced, unlike MSNBC and CNN.

To sum it up, Olbermann is the kind of guy that if he was around doing this during WW2, an American would be featured on his "World's Worst Person" segment every night.

Who are these people that couldn't see that Olbermann and Matthews convention coverage was biased? It was obvious for anyone with a brain.

I used to complain about Fox (and they did start the trend) and their habit of letting Hume and other anchors interject personal opinions into the news. I normally have no problem with Hannity, Olberman, etc. giving their opinions because they aren't anchors and that's what they get paid to do. However when they were made news anchors for the convention that type of stuff should have stopped. It was disgraceful even though I did agree with many of their opinions.

Hume is a professional, he doesn't inject insulting personal opinions into hard news coverage. FOX is totally different from MSNBC because it seperates commentary and hard news reporting. You'll never see O'Reilly anchoring the 6PM newscast.

CNN, in many ways, is even worse than MSNBC, because they are more careful to frame commentary as hard news so that the average viewer doesn't understand what he/she is watching. The only difference between Olbermann and Wolf Blitzer is Wolf's experience.

Fox News isn't that balanced.

It certainly more balanced than MSNBC. Fox is probably more conservative than the others, but they bas the Republicans too, it's not like they hold them as the all holy, like MSNBC has been doing for the Democrats.
CNN is somewhat okay. They have a liberal sway, but they do have conservatives like Glenn Beck on HN too, so they are a little balanced.

ABC, are you kidding?

FOX News is conservative. Everything else is liberal. FOX does at least try to be fair (I said try, not succeed).

Same here (as Mitch45). I'm not kidding.

Thanks, that explains A LOT about your views on the election. No wonder....

Who are these people that couldn't see that Olbermann and Matthews convention coverage was biased? It was obvious for anyone with a brain.

Right, and they had no business covering the convention as anchors, on what is supposed to be NEWS coverage. It's fine for "Hardball", and commentary news shows, not as "NEWS" coverage.
I couldn't even watch MSNBC during either of the conventions as it was so blatant. CNN sways to the left, and Fox sways to the right, but at least both of those coverages were watchable. MSNBC's coverage was downright deplorable.

MSNBC clearly had a plan to be competitive by going "biased". As the third-place network, it was a sound move. If you can't compete, at least become THE source for a significant "niché" audience. Unfortunatley, there are lots of professional journalists at MSNBC who saw just how bad the reputation of said network had sunk. You can't consider yourself a news channel and do what MSNBC did. Even those who agree with the blatant bias being shown couldn't bear it.

I hadn't noticed it until about some months ago. I always used to watch MSNBC. All of a sudden, perhaps in the spring, it struck me, "what the heck is this?". I am sure a lot of other people felt the same way. I haven't watched it for more than a flip in months now, and it used to be always on my TV. I found it unwatchable lately.
