This is the other shoe that I've been waiting to hear drop!!!

It's finally happened! Where, oh where, is the resounding chorus of support in the (very republican) business/ corporate community to step up the deportation of undocumentated workers?

That deafening sound is the sound of silence! What we're hearing, in fact, is the opposite. Who the hell is going to do the work? Pick the fruit and vegetables before they rot on the vine? Process the hogs and chickens in the plants? Oops! Not nearly enough to do the required work.

The xenophobes are screaming "build the fence, throw them out" or, in the inimitable style of Pat Buchanan, "No way, Jose."

No, it's not the liberals, the democrats-- it's the Republican business community that's saying, "umm, we got a problem."

"We're all for immigrants if they enter legally." That's always the stock response. Except that can take years and years. Won't help this summer's crop, will it.

too bad none of the illegals here pick fruit, and there's no meatpacking here too.
It's gotten so bad, there's actually no parking left for my car here, and yet, there's no crops, and no meatpacking.

You could deport half the county, and the fruit will get picked, and the meat packed, because that's such a bullshit stock answer that doesn't fly.

That's a very real divide in McCain's minions, and like George Bush, he won't get hardassed about immigration policy as he won't risk pissing off Wall Street. I'm still waiting for some real numbers from both sides of the argument to see what the costs really are.

your pal,
Fred

nope. None of the illegals here pick fruit. I don't see them in field clothes. I don't see them driving their trucks and cars the 70 miles to the fields. And that includes the Verizon crews I forgot about.

If you want to debunk that, you're going to have to do a shitload more work for your proof than a silly little internet post. I hope you speak spanish, and I hope they don't ignore you thinking you're up to no good.

You don't see anything except your computer screen and Subchat. I've lived in Miami, spent a good deal of time in Tampa and have friends at Cape Canaveral. And unlike you, I actually pay attention to where I am.

not good enough. And Miamians aren't all or mostly illegals. Keep grasping.
I hope they don't avoid your questions when they're going to work detail in the mornings, they sure don't even look me in the eyes either, nor any other gringo.

Cape Canaveral also ain't the mostly densely populated county without any farms!

Heh. How about that? And it's not just the fruit, it's the cables underground, it's the soldering in electronics sweatshops, it's the textile industry ("Se necessitan operadores") and so many other "chit jobs" that won't pay a fair wage for insane amounts of manual or expert labour. I read another article about it earlier, and one employer was only able to get ONE "legal worker" but after they were hired, they failed to show up for work.

I love it when a "lack of a plan" comes together, to praphrase "B.A. Barracus." :)

I'm surprised. I'm not sure if most americans can get jobs that americans can't do. I tried once. no dice. The american landscapers, after years, and actually did a good job here, appear to have been fired also, for corporate chain illegals.

Could be ... AMERICANS cost "real money" ... it was NYTimes which had that particular saga ... but hey ... nobody wants to pay a fair wage for "shrub artists" ... they'd much RATHER pay less for "artistas." :(

America's solution for "guest workers" though is bullsquirt ALL around. It'd be nice for PRAGMATISTAS for once to slice the bologna instead of "lawgivers." :(

I've wondered if one part of it has to do with poor working conditions. Why pay an American and have them complain or whistleblow. Along with other issues, lots.

And in the future, I'm thinking, a lot of jobs that American's used to do are probably going to stigmatized as "mexican jobs" or something. And the thought won't even cross peoples minds to do them. Even road construction.

The Korean (father and 2 sons) fish store on my corner employs 6 Mexicans (I have no idea of their status-- or of the Koreans either, for that matter.) I've watched the Mexicans work their way up in the business from truck unloaders, to ice bucket carriers, to fish filleters, to countermen. It took a while but the Koreans now trust the Mexicans to run the store on their own on Saturdays while the owner and sons take a day off.

Everybody (Koreans and Mexicans) speak enough English to wait on customers but the owner and workers have developed a Korean/ Spanish slang that seems to work for them.

To me, this is the perfect New York story. Everybody works hard, gets along, makes a few bucks. No questions asked.

What are you talking about . . . ? Thought that we have a Democratic Congress? Looks like the picture you're trying to paint is that the GOP is lax on illegal immigration and the Democrats are tough on it.

You another one that doesn't understand that there is no clear "conservative/liberal" line between the two parties?

"You another one..."

Missing verb. Minus 5 points. I expect better from The Infallible One. HA!

Why not read what I post instead of pretending to read my mind? Did I say anything about "Congress"? I referred, rather, to the "business community" which tends to be Republican where the strongest anti-immigrant voices are heard. Yet now that so many "businesses" are short of (cheap) labor, a backlash within the Republican party seems to be forming.

I'm merely an observer to this reality enjoying a bag of microwave popcorn while this film plays out.

So many of your posts remind me of the oral defense of my dissertation where I was peppered with questions that seemed designed to highlight the erudition of the examiners rather than give me a chance to say what I knew. Petty and pedantic. Argument for argument's sake.

The lady's paying $9 - $17 for electronics technicians to do assembly work? To do that, you need good technicians with good eyesight and excellent manual dexterity. They also have to be willing to do extremely repetitive, which is a problem. How long are you going to keep good technicians doing that? In skilled environments like that, turnover is something that's very costly. I don't know whether to be more surprised that the lady's topping out at $17 per hour or starting at $9 or not experiencing a problem with skill and experience walking out the door.
