Barry M Obama wants fingerprint registry

authored a bill (with 11 co-sponsors, including Sen. Barack Obama) that was incorporated into a housing bill passed by the Senate Banking Committee 19-2 before the Memorial Day recess — a bill that creates a national fingerprint registry.

One of the standards, John Berlau of the Competitive Enterprise Institute says, may “require thousands of individuals working even tangentially in the mortgage and real estate industries — and not suspected of anything — to send their prints to the feds.”

This is a step in the wrong direction — at least for a nation that preserves freedom.

Heritage foundaation. Heh. Had no problem with requiring people going to court for parking tickets having to submit DNA samples but now that the sacred bankers might have to do less, big problem now. If you go to get a job at Radio Shack at the counter, you have to pass a polygraph exam, AND submit fingerprints, DNA sample and a piss test. About TIME those who handle REAL money are subjected to the same standard as the minimimum wage retail slave!

Did you look at Senator Martinez' web page? Here's the list of what S-2595 is supposed to create:

Following is a summary of the SAFE Mortgage Licensing Act:
  • Would require that all residential mortgage loan brokers and lenders obtain a state license, and provide fingerprints, a summary of work experience, and consent for a background check to authorities.

  • To obtain licensing an individual must, at minimum:

    • Have no felony convictions;
    • Have no similar license revoked;
    • Demonstrate a record of financial responsibility;
    • Fulfill education requirements (20 hours of approved courses, to include at least 3 hours related to federal laws, 4 hours on ethics and consumer protection in mortgage lending, and 2 hours on the sub-prime mortgage marketplace); and
    • Pass a written exam (the exam must be at least 100 questions; minimum score of 75% required to pass).

  • Would require the Federal Reserve, Treasury Department, and FDIC to register all residential mortgage loan originators employed by national banks within one year of legislation’s enactment

  • State regulators must develop a satisfactory licensing system within one year of legislation’s enactment. If this does not occur, the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary is empowered to quickly develop the national registry and license, generating revenue for its implementation by charging fees to license applicants.

Now how come this is good and other similar things that GOP politicians have done is bad?

everything is done in increments. You fingerprint one group, that leads to fingerprinting them all.

btw, at University we built this gigantic high tech gym, where to enter you touch the pad and it recognizes your print. That thing caused an uproar.

Go apply for a job at a Radio Shack and follow through on it up until the first day on the job ... see what you gotta do, then get back to me.

It's been done for over six years now and nobody cared. If those are the common requirements for a chit job in retail, then they should certainly be applied to people who handle REAL money ...

They're trying to establish a federal license similar to the one that they already have for many in the financial sector - like stockbrokers. This sounds like nearly the same requirements that they have. I don't think that they're re-inventing the wheel here and that's why it has such broad support in both parties.

Radio Shack handled some "dangerous" things back in the day. I'd read about the electronics you could make with the stuff they sell. In another decade that was.
Since getting free phone calls on a payphone is a stiffer crime than terrorism and junk.

Nah, it was about the cash register and refunds. :(

Besides ... they never had any EG&G Thyratrons or nuclear triggers in stock, so all of us hobbyists had to go to Digi-Key and Mouser instead. :)
