Posted by salaamallah@hotmail.com on Sun Jun 1 21:42:15 2008 Universal Studios Hollywood caught on fire today a BIG firethis area was destroyed acc to the news i guess it can be built back some day wonder if the subway term. is still there ![]() Brownstone Street / Metropolitan Area The New York Street area has been used in countless productions over the years. It's been rebuilt after fires in 1957 and 1990, and frequently changes appearance as required by the production work at the time. The two sides of Brownstone Street are very different - one is residential, and one is a business district. Just by turning the camera around, you're in another part of town! Abbot and Costello Lady Sings the Blues (1972) The Sting (1973) The Six Million Dollar Man "Big Brother" (1976) Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992) Annie (1982) Seinfeld (TV - 1990 - 1998) Ally McBeal (TV - 1997 - 2002) Moonwalker - Michael Jackson (1988) Cast Away (2000) The District (TV - 2000-2004) The Time Machine (2002) Bruce Almighty (2003) NYPD Blue (TV - 1993-2005) Nintendo DS advert (2005) Canon magazine advert (2007) Superhero Movie (2008) |

Yeah the building where the King Kong exhibit was also burned down. Along with the town from Back to the Future and many other movies. And speaking of Seinfeld (^above) I always thought that the NYC street scenes for Seinfeld were terrible. They never looked like NYC and often looked like a small town street. OTOH the exterior of his building which was also shot in LA looked pretty NYC to me. |

And speaking of Seinfeld (^above) I always thought that the NYC street scenes for Seinfeld were terrible. They never looked like NYC and often looked like a small town street. The worst street scenes were in "The Puerto Rican Day", especially when they try to turn down the one-way street only to be met by Elaine's taxi going the other way -- there aren't any streets like that in New York at all! OTOH the exterior of his building which was also shot in LA looked pretty NYC to me. That's what I thought as well. By the way, where in LA is the real building? |

That's also where Kojak filmed there early years. Later, IIRC they came to NYC to do more location shooting.I believe the Sting was shot on New York Street also (doubling for Chicago), utilizing a removable elevated train section that was in the middle of New York Street when I was on the tour. When I did the Universal tour in 1980 (many moons ago), the tour guide also told us that because of the many exteriors needed for the epic movie "Earthquake" (1974), the New York Street was also put to use as an urban area of San Francisco. Warner Bros. also has a 'New York Street", but it is less detailed...just a bunch of brownstone facades. It was used prominently in the series, "Mike Hammer" (starring Stacey Keach). When I got a tour of Warner's lot back in '86 Michael Jackson had just finished doing a music video there earlier in the day (the one where he demolishes a car in an alley). Met Clint Eastwood that day as he was walking past the commissary to go to his Buick (name on the parking spot). |

I haven't met that many famous people. Jackie Jackson, Jim Belushi (that was more of an incident than a meeting), Jack Palance, .... I think that's it. I have seen lots of famous people that I didn't actually meet.Aside from that street it's amazing how many movies that are supposed to be Chicago or NYC, are actually filmed in downtown Los Angeles. |

Also, the cult-classic series, "Kolchak: The Night Stalker" used Universal's New York Street whenever they needed an exterior street scene in downtown Chicago (where the series was supposed to take place). |

When that street seems to work is when they just keep the same camera shot. If they can get enough props and it's dark it can kind of pass for a NYC street. But when they walk around like on Seinfeld it looks really hokey. |

It got the Back to the Future town too, and the clock tower?I have photos from 1995 and 1999 when I went to Universal. I also went in 2001, but didn't take photos that time, as I think they were filming a movie in the Back to the Future area. I have to look for them. It's been used in a few movies. |

Two things you can notice right away: (1) fire hydrants in LA County are yellow; (2) parking meters and/or street lights aren't the same style as in NYC (cobra-head lights). If you have a good eye for details you can easily spot when a show or movie isn't being filmed in NYC. |

I took the tour of Warner Bros a few years back, and all of a sudden we were in "Hazzard".... I recognized it right away. I used to love that show as a kid.The view of Univerasal studios backlot is pretty clear from much of Warner Bros.....it must have been some awful site looking down from the mountains from Warner Bros to that awful fire down below in Universal. |

Yeah....I saw Hazzard County 'town square' with the gazebo in the center of the town square. I think 'Dukes' of Hazzard' was over by time I was there in 1986. It was also the same location where the "Gremlins" (first one) was shot and bees destroyed a south-western town in the film, "The Swarm".A friend of mine got me on the set of "V" (Visitors), and I sat in the chair used by one of the alien leaders in that series. It was a neat 'behind the scenes" tour. I doubt if I'd be able to do the things I did back then in today's security-minded world. |

Addendum: at the end of the episode where Kramer and Newman try to set up their rickshaw business, there's a shot of Newman rolling down a hill in their rickshaw after Kramer accidentally let go of it. It was clearly shot in downtown LA -- if you look closely, there's a Foothill Transit bus in the background. |

Yeah, I heard about Back to the Future closing. Those were two of my favorite rides in Universal Florida. King Kong closed quite a few years ago in Florida. You used to enter the ride through the original Penn Station Building on NY Street. It became the Mummy ride I think.I heard the Back to the Future ride closed a year or two ago. I believe it is to become the Simpson Ride too. I can't imagine Universal without Back to the Future. It's been some years since I have been there, and it always seemed like one of the most popular rides. |
