Major powers hold more "serious talks" about Iran sanctions

Let's see how serious the USA is, because they haven't been serious for decades despite the hawks' posturing. If the right wings of France and Germany are more serious, that torpedoes the (never, ever true) notion that the right wings in European governments are more to the left than US right wing; the opposite has always been the case.

Of course, the UN "Security Council" will take the side of the communists.

Powers have "serious" talks on Iran sanctions

Fri Sep 21, 2007 9:06pm EDT

By Arshad Mohammed

WASHINGTON (Reuters) — Major powers said on Friday they had "serious and constructive" talks about new U.N. Security Council sanctions aimed at trying to force Iran to halt its uranium enrichment activities.

But the officials of the five permanent Security Council members and Germany said they will keep pursuing a "dual track" approach to Iran -- trying to persuade it to abandon enrichment via negotiations while considering new sanctions.

Western nations, which suspect Iran may be seeking to develop an atomic bomb under the cover of its civil nuclear program, have demanded Tehran suspend its uranium enrichment, a process that can produce fuel for a bomb.

Iran says its nuclear program is to generate power so it can export more of its oil and gas and has so far rebuffed three U.N. Security Council resolutions — including two that imposed sanctions — demanding it halt uranium enrichment.

"The discussions were serious and constructive," U.S. Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns said on behalf of the political directors of Britain, China, France, Russia, the United States and Germany after they met in Washington.

"They had a detailed discussion of the elements of a new United Nations Security Council Resolution, as well as possibilities of continued dialogue with Iran," he added.

"They reaffirmed their commitment to maintain a dual track approach on Iran's nuclear activities."

While France and Britain strongly back a U.S. push for harsher Security Council sanctions, China and Russia oppose this. Other European nations also have qualms about further sanctions.

NEW FINANCIAL SANCTIONS?

The Security Council on December 23 imposed trade sanctions on Iran's sensitive nuclear and advanced missile programs. On March 24, the 15-nation body froze the assets of 28 groups, companies and individuals and banned Tehran's arms exports.

New U.N. Security Council measures under consideration include additional financial sanctions and an inspection of cargo to and from Iran to search for banned nuclear-related materials, diplomats have said.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, who on Sunday raised the specter of war with Iran but has since backed away from his comment, stressed diplomatic efforts to end Iran's suspected nuclear arms program.

"It is important to note that we have set out a diplomatic path that includes negotiation as the preferred means by which to resolve this issue," Rice told reporters at a joint news conference with Kouchner.

"We will seek further resolutions in the U.N. Security Council should Iran not take up the negotiating track," Rice added, noting the Security Council had used both asset freezes and visa bans to punish Iran in the past.

"There are any number of ways that we can expand those efforts," Rice said.

Kouchner reiterated France's support for stronger penalties for Iran from the Security Council.

"We may hope that there will be a third resolution to reinforce the sanctions, which up until now have not been very effective," Kouchner told reporters.

And you know what else, along the SAME lines as that:

Israeli forces today captured senior terrorists it accused of planning a suicide bombing but let them go on orders from Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's office, WND has learned.

Olmert recently granted the captured terrorists amnesty. His office ordered them released after angry calls from officials of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah party, according to security sources.

Earlier today, the Israel Defense Forces thwarted a suicide attack reportedly meant for the center of Israel when it arrested a would-be bomber and two of his accomplices – Jamal and Ibrahim Ismail, who are brothers and senior leaders of the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades terrorist group.

The Brigades, the "military wing" of Fatah, took responsibility together with the Islamic Jihad terror organization for every suicide bombing in Israel the past three years.

In a gesture to Abbas, Olmert in July granted amnesty to 178 West Bank-based members of the Brigades. The Ismail brothers were on the amnesty list. The amnesty agreement required that the terrorists disarm, refrain from terror activities and restrict their movements for three months to the area in which they reside.

Stop the insanity!!!

Since our delegation is guided by our leadership, I think the answer is obvious. Seems what the U.N. is doing is with the tacit approval of our "regime."

Apparently, between that, the dollar in the toilet, us pissing off EVERY supplier of oil for the upcoming winter, Greenspan on the rampage and all else, it does sorta take extreme anacephaly to have not already come to that conclusion. It's why I don't even bother arguing with the dittoheads anymore. It's too much like masturbation without any result.

I'm just grateful that I have a lot of trees, fireplaces that actually work and plenty of food roaming the property. *AND* I get paid in Euros. That helps too. :)

Yup, the untouchable ones in the "War on Terror". Ain't it significant that whatever they say gets translated into English, and we never heard too much translated out of Saddam Hussein's speeches? That includes all their "Death to America" non-stop rhetoric.

Iran warns West against attack

Sat Sep 22, 2007 10:29pm EDT

By Hossein Jaseb and Fredrik Dahl

TEHRAN (Reuters) — Iran told Western powers on Saturday they would regret any attack against the country over its nuclear activities, and it rolled out a display of missiles and other military hardware that underscored the warning.

"Our message to the enemies is: Do not do it," the head of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards, Mohammad Ali Jafari, said, speaking to reporters less than a week after France's foreign minister publicly raised the prospect of war.

"They will regret it, as they are regretting it in Iraq," the commander added, speaking on the sidelines of an annual military parade just outside the capital.

Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, gave a similarly defiant message in a meeting with top officials including President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, saying whoever attacked Iran "will face the consequences", state television reported.

The Islamic Republic put on show medium-range missiles it has said could reach Israel and U.S. bases in the Gulf in a parade marking the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war.

Three Saegheh jet fighters, a new generation of domestically produced military aircraft, flew overhead.

Iran is embroiled in a standoff with the West over its atomic ambition, which the United States says is to make bombs but which Tehran says is solely for generating electricity.

Washington has said it wants a diplomatic resolution to the dispute but has not ruled out military action if that fails.

French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner last Sunday raised the specter of war, but has since backed away from the comment.

Iran, the world's fourth-largest oil producer, has threatened to hit back at regional U.S. interests if attacked.

U.N. SANCTIONS

Major powers, meeting in Washington, said on Friday they had "serious and constructive" talks about new U.N. Security Council sanctions aimed at trying to force Iran to halt its nuclear work, following two rounds of limited sanctions since December.

The officials of the five permanent Security Council members and Germany said they will keep pursuing a "dual track" approach to Iran — trying to persuade it to abandon such activities via negotiations while considering new sanctions.

Ahmadinejad, addressing the parade, made clear Tehran would not bow to Western pressure.

"Those who think, that by using such decayed tools as psychological warfare and economic sanctions, they can stop the Iranian nation's progress are making a mistake," he said.

The Islamic Republic showed among its weaponry a type of missile, Shahab-3, it has said could reach 2,000 km (1,250 miles) — enabling it to hit Israel and U.S. bases in the region.

But the state television commentator said Shahab-3 had a range of only 1,300 km. Another missile at the parade, Ghadr-1, can reach targets 1,800 km (1,125 miles) away, he said. It was believed to be the first time it has been shown publicly.

Troops, tanks and anti-aircraft guns passed in front of the podium. One truck carried the words "Death to America".

Parachutists dropped from a helicopter over the parade area near the tomb of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the inspiration of the 1979 Islamic revolution and founder of the Islamic Republic.

Asked how Iran would respond if any country allowed its territory to be used as a base for an attack, Jafari said: "You have seen the missiles — just pull the trigger and shoot."

Did they march out the destruction of America like they do everyyear?

You know the halftime shows we have in real sports, where they march around in colors and do shapes and stuff. That's what their military parades do.

I still want to know what the Oct 16th surprise is that was reported once and swept under the rug.
