A national treasure: the US Postal Service

Posted by Peter Rosa on Mon Oct 19 13:24:04 2026

So this morning I went to the post office to send a letter - not a package - overnight. It’s going a distance of about 45 miles. It was $38, and “overnight” means they’ll try to deliver it tomorrow but can’t guarantee delivery until Wednesday afternoon.

Why on earth don't you use Priority Mail? I just used it - $11.10 and 2 days to get to Philadelphia (though they say it might be 3 days).

USPS Ground Advantage also gives you tracking and is a bit less expensive.

Why are you trying to send letters overnight? What needs to be done that cannot be done via email?

UPS can't even make such a guarantee, for double the price.

Bump.

Though today it was almost $12. But still.
