How did Halloween become a season?

Posted by LuchAAA on Sun Oct 4 01:20:51 2026

All the stores are decorated and many homes decorate for Halloween as much as they do for Christmas.

I think Starbucks and Dunkin' played a big role. They spend millions promoting the seasonal spice flavored beverages which kind of ushers in the Halloween season.

Also, women run most households and like the idea of decorating. All the big box stores like Walmart and Home Depot or pharmacies like CVS push Halloween hard.

Halloween is based on Samhain.

Halloween is based on Samhain

That's correct. Therefore, you answered your own question.

Now at risk of triggering you over things Irish, the name "Samhain" is what the Irish government and Irish-speaking population uses as the name of the month of November.

Halloween is a children’s holiday. Its increasing prominence is a symptom of the infantilization of society.

Correct, but the manner of its modern celebration is.

It's marketed to adults too.

Many have Halloween parties.

Exactly. Because people don’t grow up.

Stores have christmas displays up since SEPTEMBER.

Target has a big halloween thing, but not mall stores. All the trees and crap are already up.

Samhain (Re: How did Halloween become a season?)

Samhain.

No one ever talked about this before. Now, it's mainstream to acknowledge the connection between Samhain and Halloween.

The reason no one talked about it, is because no one knew.

Meanwhile, there are still 45 minute delays on the inbound GWB.

The last time I had to go to Hackensaaaack, there was no traffic on the bridge going back. It was the 11 AM hour.

Interesting. There is usually drama on the GWB many hours a day.

At one point, there are two lanes that merge to one going to the lower level approach.

Many people don't honor the solid line and ride the diagonal lines and merge late.

That's you. You're a late lane merger who cuts the line.

Any time I come into NY, I have never been able to cross the GWB doing the speed limit. Nowhere near it in either direction.

Do you know how to pronounce "Samhain"?

This is for the month of November 2020, JFTR. The text underneath "Samhain" translates as "Month of the dead".

No, I do not cross diagonal lines. But I do cut over at the last minute right BEFORE the line turns solid.

Even at night they close lanes for construction so it’s still slow.

But like I mentioned elsewhere: 11 AM. I was shocked at the time I was making when I was approaching the Triborough.
