The economy is dead

Posted by Peter Rosa on Mon Oct 5 09:05:36 2026

I saw this horror story on Reddit:

An insurance company reached out to me. I didn't apply. They came to me.

Screening, hiring manager, hiring manager's manager, team panel, case study, board deck, HR final. Seven rounds across six weeks.

I passed all of them. Scored top marks on the take-home. Clean background check. HR said "the team really liked you."

Then I got the offer. In writing. Start date locked.

I did all the "right" things: stopped interviewing elsewhere, turned down two other active processes, started looking at apartments in that city.

The night before, I set three alarms. My calendar said "First day!!!"

Then at 8 a.m., one hour before I was supposed to log on, HR called.

"I'm so sorry, but the CEO personally reviewed your resume and decided you don't have enough years of experience, so we're rescinding the offer."

The CEO.

The CEO who sat in zero of the seven interviews. The CEO who hadn't looked at my resume once in six weeks. The CEO who let HR, the hiring manager, and an entire team run a full 1.5-month process, let me reject other offers, let me stop job hunting entirely.

He glanced at my resume in the final hour and said "nah."

So now I'm sitting here with a revoked offer, two declined interviews, and a resume gap that just got two months longer.

Someone in this sub once said "they wait until you start believing before they destroy you." Truer words.

To everyone still grinding in this market: don't stop applying. Not until the badge is physically around your neck.

Something similar happened to me years ago. Will never forget it.

In the fall of 1990, a few months after I graduated from law school, I applied for an attorney's position with the NYC Law Department Family Law Division. I was interviewed, interviewed again and again. The City did a background check and I was then hired with a congratulations and welcome aboard letter. I was fingerprinted, photographed and provided with payroll information, where I would be working, everything. I was advised that my start date would be announced within 2 weeks. Everything looked great. My uncle bought me a new briefcase with my initials monogramed on the front.

Then, a few days later, I read in the paper that Mayor Dinkins was instituting a hiring freeze due to the City economy. I thereafter received a letter from the Law Department referencing the hiring freeze and assuring me that since I had already been hired, the freeze did not apply to me. I was told to stand by as my start date announcement was imminent.

September passed, October passed, no start date. In November I received a letter from the Law Department re-confirming that I had been hired and that they were working with the Mayor's office to get a start date. I was told to hang tight.

November passed, December passed, no start date. In January I received a letter from the Law Department advising that "in their view", I had been hired but that the Mayor's office was slow in providing start dates for people in the pipeline like me.

January passed, February passed. My school loans were starting to come due. Banks were calling me. In March, I received another letter from the Law Department advising that they did not know when I would be getting a start date and that if I wanted, I could start exploring other opportunities. Seeing the writing on the wall, I updated my resume and started the mass mailings. Unfortunately, the economy in 1991 was bad and private firms were not hiring. Finally, in August, 11 months after I was hired by the Law Department, I was hired by a small downtown Manhattan firm. My starting salary was $15,000 per year less than the Law Department would have paid but I had no choice.

A month later, I received a final letter from the Law Department, expressing their regret at what happened and that I would be better served if I moved on from their offer. I was told that if a start date came through, they would notify me immediately. I never heard from them again.

Yep. And the worst part was because I was late in repaying my school loans, the banks capitalized the interest and by the time I starting paying the loans in September of 1991, I owed almost $5,000 more than I would have had I started paying on time.

35 years have passed and that story still bothers me.

Bureaucracy. I did consult an employment attorney who told me I might be able to sue the City for breach of agreement and force them to give me a start date but he advised against it because of the cost of the suit and the endless delays that the City could create.

How come I have more than a half a dozen stories just like this?
Even those when I was in school......university switched to a new computer system. No ones loans were disbursed for almost 4 months. Lines around the block for months to see the status.

No one ever offered the information that they would've given you a short term bridge loan until it was mentioned....after it was finally fixed next semester.

That's just one story.

The poster had gotten a written offer with a firm start date. Withdrawing from other jobs for which they’d been interviewing was totally reasonable.

At least the poster didn’t quit an existing job (the reference to a resume gap makes it appear they’d been out of work).

Nonsense like this would never happen in a strong economy. The CEO rejected this excellent candidate in the hopes that the company would get someone absolutely 101% perfect, and in an economy in which jobs get hundreds or thousands of absolutely perfectly qualified candidates that actually happens.

Not to mention that requiring SEVEN rounds of interviews is beyond insane.

You would keep interviewing after getting a written job offer for a job that you wanted?

I'm lucky (and dumb) that I don't have much job searching experience so I don't really know how it works. I've only had three jobs since college and I've only applied for two jobs since my first. Now I'm near retirement so i possibly will never apply for another job.

Even so, I am certain that this particular story would never have happened a few years ago when the economy was thriving. Especially the part about SEVEN interview rounds. That’s insane.
