First, this wasn’t a total disruption like in 1973, there are many more sources of oil now besides the Persian Gulf, but the shortages in 1973 were exacerbated by price controls (ie a ban on so-called “price gouging”). So that instead of charging more money, gas stations sold gas for below market and ran out of fuel. |

There’s just less oil all around. If the Asians can’t buy Iranian oil, they’ll buy oil from someplace else, and bid up the price. Oil is priced globally. Even if the US didn't import any oil, local prices would still go up. |
