The vast majority of residents in Luxembourg speak four languages: Luxembourgish, the everyday local language; French and German, which are the official languages; and English. |

It’s easily do-able.That depends on one's age. Children are wired to learn several languages simultaneously, without confusing them. The trick is that a different person speaks each language. A Canadian Prime Minister named Louis St. Laurent once remarked it wasn't until he was 10 when he discovered that not all fathers spoke French and all mothers spoke English. |

It does sound like his English is really poor, which doesn't reflect well on the voters of Lawrence, which I see from Wikipedia is 82% Latino. You'd want a mayor who can advocate well on the city's behalf with state and federal agencies.But I could understand his using an interpreter in a court proceeding even if his English were OK. You could easily make a fool of yourself (and maybe even end up losing the case) if you use one wrong word. |

I used to live in a place where we had 5 city council members, including the mayor. In a single day our mayor was arrested along with one of the councilman. Another councilman was granted immunity to testify. They all spoke English.Maybe we just have voters that are dumber than ever? Maybe it's just me getting old, but I feel like the pendulum is rapidly swinging to ideologies that I don't think are well conceived. |
