Changes Coming to New York License Points

Posted by TRAIN DUDE on Sun Dec 21 09:14:00 2025

From Google AI
"In New York, points are added to your license for traffic violations, with 11 or more points in 18 months leading to suspension, though a recent change effective February 2026 reduces the threshold to 10 points in 24 months, and points stay active longer. Common violations include speeding (3-11 points), cell phone use (5 points), and failing to stop for a school bus (5 points). Accumulating points also triggers extra Driver Responsibility Assessment (DRA) fees, plus fines, with points staying on your record for 18 months for suspension purposes but potentially longer for insurance."

One item not mentioned are equipment issues. Your license plate bulb burning out could have resulted in a ticket where if you replaced the bulb in a week, all was forgiven. Now one point will be assessed against your license.

My thoughts: Anyone who drives the Southern State Pkwy at night has seen the black BMWs with heavily tinted windows and modified exhaust, racing and weaving in and out of traffic. We need tougher penalties
to curb aggressive drivers, certainly, but how many of these reckless drivers aleady have suspended licenses, expired tags and no insurance. I'm afraid that these changes will be nothing more than a cash grab for the state and a windfall for the insurance companies on the backs of the beleaguered NY driver. Thoughts?

You’re probably correct. The insurance is outrageous

IMO we need tougher penalties for texting and driving. I've been rear ended twice in two years by some young knucklehead texting and driving. One incident resulted in a destroyed bicycle that I was travelling with mounted on a rear fitting bike rack. Another where (no bike on a rack this time) I took a clean shot resulting in a total loss judgment by my insurance co. Thankfully no rate increase (yet) since both times I wasn't at fault (and not hurt) since I was at a dead stop in both cases

PA hit us with an anti-cellphone law recently. Shapiro needs to go.

Governors don’t enact laws.

Gotta rape the responsible drivers! Meanwhile, the aforementioned will just keep speeding in their uninsured unregistered, fake/stolen plates and they will always run from the police, while filming for YouTube
