Instead of Free Buses and Grocery Stores

Posted by Catfish 44 on Mon Oct 27 22:56:39 2025

Why hasn’t there been an offer to make CUNY free again like it was from 1847 to 1976? That policy must have produced countless productive citizens who contributed to the city, nation, and globe.
Or that’s not what certain folks want anymore?

I'm not sure what the answer is, but I think "open admissions" meant the need for tuition.

I think certain CUNY four-year schools were free but the community colleges weren't.

The timeline below highlights the key events that led to CUNY's imposition of tuition in 1976:
Timeline of Key Events
• 1847-1969: CUNY maintains a tradition of free tuition beginning as the Free Academy and later as a full public university system. wikipedia +1
• 1961: CUNY is officially established, consolidating previous municipal colleges and continuing tuition-free education.

• 1964: CUNY's free tuition policy extended to both senior and community colleges, with community colleges officially joining in 1964.
• 1970: CUNY institutes Open Admissions, greatly expanding access and increasing student enrollment, especially from diverse and working-class backgrounds.

• 1974-1975: A rapid increase in enrollment and operating costs occurs while the city's finances worsen, setting the stage for fiscal crisis intervention.
•1975: New York City faces a severe fiscal crisis. The city narrowly avoids bankruptcy through federal and state intervention, which comes with stipulations for drastic budget cuts and restructuring, including at CUNY. lohud +1
• June 1976: The Board of Higher Education votes to impose tuition for the first time in CUNY's history due to the financial crisis and as part of the agreement allowing for state takeover and continuing federal assistance.

Mamdummy doesn't make offers like that. He's not worried since he's being coronated rather than elected.

If it needed to be free, Qatar would've made the schools free.

He doesn’t even know CUNY was free at one time.
The fools supporting this man prefer worthless shit for free than an education.

And "freezing the rent" isn't even subsidized by the city or state like free buses would be. It's just a "soak the rich" socialist scheme that would obviously appeal to downwardly mobile Sanderistas.

They can freeze the rent and when the landlord can’t pay the heat bill they can freeze in another way.

You see, in that case you call 311 and the landlord gets fined and you can withhold the rent.

What does that accomplish. Some of this is as if the landlords arbitrarily raise rents. I’m sure some are artificially high, if not many. There has to be a line in the sand where the landlords can keep the property in safe working condition and make a little profit and not kill the tenants.

Mamdani's plan only applies to rent stabilized apartments, where landlords can't arbitrarily raise the rent.

Some landlords are actually slumlords and reporting to 311 is the only way to get necessary repairs. In other cases, the tenants are just being assholes. It's also illegal to evict someone for the reason that they reported a violation to 311.
