"The Prince ", by Niccolo Machiavelli

Posted by LuchAAA on Mon Oct 13 00:36:27 2025

I just finished reading The Prince.

It's interesting and can still be applied to real life today. It can also be applied to subchat or otchat.

Otchat is a principality and if The Prince(of otchat) makes a mistake he will be in grief.

One interesting thing about this book is the number of SAT level words. I had to use a dictionary several times per chapter.

I have that book but have not yet read it. I often obtain works of classic literature like that not to read... not to read, but instead to impress. I'll throw books like that into my backpack and then prominently display them on my table at some indie coffee shop in Woodstock to attract attention of Progressive Democrats who present as either female or fluid. Needless to say, in those situations, I have already read a single-page summary using CliffsNotes or SparkNotes or, on rare occasions, Wikipedia in case someone approaches me having read the book and wants to discuss it. I just ordered On Life and Death from Oxford University Press by the ancient Roman politician, statesman, philosopher, administrator, and orator Cicero for no reason other than the design of the cover, a book I have not nor will I ever open much less read. My only concern is that it serves my purposes pursuits plans call it what you will. Time and circumstances will tell whether I am ultimately rewarded with an intimate and lasting relationship.

Note: I will sometimes look at the pictures and read the captions so I can be honest and tell people I read the book. I could care or not care less one of those things what others may think of my motives, ulterior or otherwise.

Were you reading some other text? There's a reason why the word "Machiavellian" means to be unscrupulous and deceitful in politics.

Have you read Death of a Salesman? I read it again in February.

To Kill a Mockingbird is a classic I need to reread.

I hate reading plays. It's just so tedious to read the name of the character and then what they said as opposed to just having it in prose, or watching the play.

Unfortunately you can't watch plays anymore because legitimate theater* is dead.

*The term "legitimate theater" does not include musicals. This is the actual definition and not a dunk on musical theater.

I read it in high school and saw the play at the Circle in the Square theatre in Manhattan. I really enjoyed the book and production. This year I was considering picking up a copy of both Death of a Salesman and The Crucible both by Miller.

Had to read those two latter Arthur Miller plays in high school.

What I remember most about Miller was that Marilyn Monroe was his second wife (and he her third husband).

I have 12 books of plays by Shakespeare along with the complete sonnets. Many people believe Shakespeare wrote the plays exclusively for the stage and not to be read as a stand-alone piece of literature but a considerable amount of recent scholarship states that is not necessarily true in many cases. There was literally a price to be paid to attend the productions and some citizens were destitute but could borrow the written works from libraries or friends.

Anyway, with the possible exception of Olog-hai, I am the leading expert on this site with respect to the Shakespearean oeuvre and will defeat anyone who challenges me on anything to do with the Bard or otherwise engages me in debate on the works of the Renaissance or the Western canon more broadly. Do not try me.

Destitute citizens of the day were nearly all illiterate.

I accept your premise or fact since you wrote it but in my defense I wrote what I read from more than one source.

This is indirectly related to our points, if at all, but I happened across this blog written by someone or the other and found it interesting, the comments as well.

As in public high school, not Catholic high school.

I am not exactly sure but I think I am in the early stages of getting attacked by the Spider-Pig in the Shakespeare thread. That guy is merciless but if my inference is indeed valid, he just made a huge mistake.
