Posted by Peter Rosa on Thu Sep 11 15:45:49 2025 Latest reports say the shooter used a rifle chambered in .30-06 (pronounced thirty ought six). While that’s a popular hunting round, and has been around since 1906, it’s not something you just pick up and start shooting. It has such strong recoil that inexperienced shooters are unlikely to be able to hit the side of a barn with it. You have to shoot hundreds or thousands of rounds with progressively more powerful calibers and work your way up.As a result, the shooter almost certainly has a LOT of shooting experience. |

A military background certainly is possible. Lee Harvey Oswald was able to make his shots (shorter distance, but a moving target) because he had extensive rifle training in the Marines. |

It’s possible that it was an amateur, this was Utah where hunting is super popular. An experienced hunter would be used to shots from that distance and might be able to handle the recoil. |
