Remember it well. Around 4 pm we list all signals on the D line. I was at Bedford Park heading home.

We should have one every few years to keep folks on their toes.
I got my light back on fairly quickly and stayed up most of the night watching the news with the a/c on full blast.
The next day I watched a pbs fundraiser featuring a performance of Bobby Darin in 1973. Good times.

That's why backup generators were invented.

IINM, before electric grids, it was envisioned that each house would indeed have its own permanent generator.

I too have vivid memories of that blackout. I was headed for my moms apartment at 59-11 Queens Blvd (just getting of a Flushing bound #7) and came across the intersection of Queens Blvd & 58th St. With dark traffic lights, that intersection was complete gridlock w/horns blaring accompanied by yelling and screaming. What a mess indeed!
