Another factory NYC didn’t get

Posted by Peter Rosa on Wed Jul 2 12:11:07 2025

Hyundai’s “Metaplant” EV and battery factory complex in Georgia, about 25 miles from Savannah. Construction began in late 2022 and production began two years later (how’s that Second Avenue Subway doing?) There’s a total of 16 million square feet of floor space and 8,000 jobs. It’s also a big boost to rail as most of the production ships on auto racks through new sidings.

Meanwhile Floyd Bennett Field is just sitting there, economically worthless. Even the sports center that occupied some of the old buildings went bust. But no, New Yorkers are too sophisticated for (ick!) factories.

A company like this looks at the local workforce, and logistics.

NYC doesn't have the workforce.

NYC has a massive workforce, there probably are more people within ten miles of Floyd Bennett Field than within 100 miles of the Hyundai plant.

Again. Workforce. Not population. Never mind nobody around here wants a battery factory in Floyd Bennett Field.

NYC has a somewhat higher unemployment rate than the rest of the country, 4.8% vs. 4.4% or something like that, so finding 8,000 qualified workers would be easy.

Not near either rail or an interstate.

Nothing foreign and asian companies love more than dealing with bigotted northeastern "workers" and their drama.

It would be a great idea to get a factory with the ruling elite being AOC and Zo'. What could possibly go wrong?

Other than the worker issue, the fact that people want experiences and not things, and all the other problems.

Yep, I'm cheap when it comes to buying cars and clothing, but I go out of my way to make memories traveling and book nicer hotel rooms, airline seats, etc.
