Ketchup (Catsup) Question

Posted by Bill Newkirk on Fri Jun 27 09:17:48 2025

I heard that Ketchup is made with food dye for coloring. I don't know if this is true or not.

But if true and red dye is removed, what color will ketchup be ? Clear ketchup ?

Bill M.

It’ll be an appetizing gray.

Have not seen red dye listed on ketchup.

Companies know how to get around labeling though.

Ketchup is made with concentrate, and does not need artificial colors.

Answer is no, at least when it comes to Heinz. The red color comes from tomato concentrate.

There are a zillion recipes online for homemade tomato ketchup, if you're worried about artificial food dyes.
