Posted by Fred G on Tue Mar 13 11:53:58 2007 March 13, 2007Stardust Hotel-Casino Is Demolished By STEVE FRIESS LAS VEGAS, March 13 — With a deafening rumble and a cloud of debris that has become all but customary in this city of short-lived icons, the venerable Stardust Hotel-Casino was demolished early this morning. The spectacular demolition ended a yearlong farewell to a classic 48-year-old resort that was, in its heyday, considered the ultimate in luxury and style. It was a frequent haunt of Frank Sinatra and his Rat Pack, the original Las Vegas Strip home of the illusionist duo Siegfried and Roy, and the scene of reputed organized crime activity that inspired the book and film “Casino.” The NYT Article Here. I visited the place several times in 1990 & 91 and did some work for their convention center. Oh well, another old Vegas soldier bites the dust. your pal, Fred |

Name corrected. This is yet another example of how Las Vegas is a dynamic modern city that faces the future. Huge buildings barely 20 years old are demolished so even bigger new ones can take their place. Meanwhile, here in New York, we've got a huge hole downtown that probably never will be rebuilt - say, whatever happened to the "Freedom Tower?" It's no surprise that Las Vegas has a world-leading economy where unemployment is something you read about in history books, while in New York the concept of an unemployment rate in the single digits is impossible to fathom. I wonder if it was demolished with fanfare (an implosion party) like they do so many other casinos in Vegas when they are demolished. I remember there was a big thing when they imploded the Sands in the 90's....or is it so common nowadays that they don't do that anymore.... |

It's an example of a giant sprawling city that has very limited real estate and more money than it can handle.Any other sprawling city of that growth and size doesn't rebuild, they derelict an area and move onto the next, as if land grows on trees. Vegas is one of a kind, or was till China outdid it. |

The Sands was torn down in the 90's. The Stardust recently. If you respond to the main thread though, you will keep getting "Sands" unless you change the title. |

Exactly my point, except off the strip, they reuse the same landarea for decades, which is more than any other new city in America has done. |

And how can you sing a song in Vegas if there is no Stardust to sing about? And now the purple dusk of twilight time Steals across the meadows of my heart High up in the sky the little stars climb Always reminding me that we're apart You wander down the lane and far away Leaving me a song that will not die Love is now the stardust of yesterday The music of the years gone by Sometimes I wonder why I spend The lonely night dreaming of a song The melody haunts my reverie And I am once again with you When our love was new And each kiss an inspiration But that was long ago Now my consolation Is in the stardust of a song Beside a garden wall When stars are bright You are in my arms The nightingale tells his fairy tale A paradise where roses bloom Though I dream in vain In my heart it will remain My stardust melody The memory of love's refrain |

Hard to believe this was the Stardust I remember so well, seeing it such a mess is hard: |

I found another.Sniff, sniff, I stayed at the Boardwalk Casino, just a few months before this happened... It was between the Monte Carlo and the Bellagio. I can even see my room's window! The Boardwalk of course wasn't as famous as many of the others, so it didn't get all the fanfare. It was a nice little cheap place to stay, if you were only staying a night or so, but still wanted to be right in the middle of everything. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4lWAYvrsOw BTW, I believe the Frontier Casino is also coming down in the next few weeks, right next to Stardust. |

BTW, I believe the Frontier Casino is also coming down in the next few weeks, right next to Stardust. The casino I'd be most sorry to see go is the former Barbary Coast, which is now called Bill's Gambling Hall. When we were in Las Vegas last August it was the one where I had the best luck, and there was something charming about its slightly shabby decor. Not to mention the fact that the table limits were somewhat lower than at the fancier places. But Harrah's recently bought it, hence the new moniker, and rumors are rife that Harrah's will use the site for a sorely needed expansion of the next door Flamingo, also a Harrah's property. If you don't go yearly to Vegas, each time you go there it's unrecognizable. I go about once every 2 or 3 years. I heard Bourbon St Casino also is closed, and slated for implosion. The Boardwalk is the first casino I have stayed at that is now gone. The Casino sort of sucked, but the hotel was less than half many of the others. You were right in the middle of everything, and in the tower, you had great views of the Strip. I have stayed at the Mirage, MGM Grand, Boardwalk, Monte Carlo, Mandalay Bay, and Luxor over the years. |

There's no comparison between the replacement of a casino with another casino and the replacement of a de facto government owned structure that was destroyed by a terrorist attack and a rebuilding process that essentially hobbled because of the public input that is absent from any private building construction. |
