Even Milwaukee is making New York look pathetic

Posted by Peter Rosa on Sun Mar 26 21:56:05 2023

While the Javits Center remains woefully inadequate, Milwaukee is building a huge expansion of its convention center.

If Covid and Zoom have reduced the need for working in the office, there will also be a lot less need for trade shows and the venues for housing them.

Trade shows will continue to be a place to strike deals. However, their use to supply product information to the trade has already been supplanted by a Google search.

And nothing gets done. I recall reading several years ago that the Javits Center was the 13th largest in the country by square footage. That's pathetic.

It's on a very congested city where room want available.

Plus, the Irish Westies and Italian crime organizations were involved in construction and operations for years. It cost the Javits millions.

Anyway, cities like San Diego and especially Las Vegas have too much to offer and win big conversations even if NYC had bigger modern facilities.

There’s still a lot of value in face to face time as well. It’s kind of a balance because a lot of stuff doesn’t require in person presence either.

Alas, you appear to be wrong again. I am currently in Las Vegas. I'll be at the Venetian Expo Center. A friend is putting up displays for 6 different vendors at this one show. Following, he will be doing booths for 30 or so vendors at the Real Estate and Jewelery shows. Also his company is doing shows in Chicago, Texas, Seattle and New York. Hundreds of people are employed full time building and dismantling these displays. Huge sums are spent at local businesses who supply carpeting, furniture and even food. There is a shortage of qualified help but not a shortage of interest in trade shows

Of course, Milwaukee has to build a big convention center to attract conventions and therefore visitors. New York has enough visitors as it is.

I mean,it's one thing for New York to be upstaged by the huge convention centers in Las Vegas and Orlando as those are the most tourism-oriented cities in the country. But Milwaukee is scarcely a tourist destination, nor is it a city that's growing like crazy such as Austin or Boise. For it to leave New York in the dust is shameful.

The tech companies I worked for in the 1990s and early 2000s were already reducing their expo presences by 2000 because our prospects could find out about us via the internet.

NYC doesn't have to have the biggest "everything" to still enjoy its reputation.

I went to a convention in Indianapolis and thought it was great how they had the convention center so well-connected to several hotels through sky-bridges over the street allowing thousands at a time to have meetings without having to deal with the weather and such. You can tell the city knew that it was central-ish in American geography and this is what they set themselves up for.

Of course it only took me a few minutes to recognize that the convention center and football stadium were basically the whole city, and when I landed back in NY I didn't have the slightest interest in turning around to go back.

(This is nothing against the people of the area of course, with whom I had only positive encounters).

I agree.

The "World's Largest Truck Stop" is in Walcott, Iowa. There's a reason for that, and NYC won't be falling behind Walcott, Iowa because our truck stops don't match up.

On a side note, NYC's subway doesn't have too many superlatives -- it's not the oldest or the largest in the world or the only one that runs 24 hours but it's still so iconic and intriguing because it ranks really well in these and other categories all at once.

Well, there is a rather famous race track there, but generally, you are right. I wouldn't call it flyover, since they have a NFL team and a NBA team (and the airport (IND) used to be a focus city for NorthWORST airlines (I don't know if Delta kep it, probably not, as it but a few hours drive to Cincinnati (CVG)).

In 2019 Delta had just started a nonstop to Paris from Indianapolis a few times per week. I remember seeing a whole wall in the terminal dedicated to showing locals how they now have a gateway to Europe featuring Paris and all the connections available there.

Not sure if that service went out before Covid or with Covid. But even since Covid Delta has been putting back / increasing European routes and the Wiki page for IND has no flights to Europe at the moment (for any airline).
