The original Nathan's in Coney Island

Posted by Jeff Rosen on Mon Apr 11 20:23:41 2022

I was there yesterday. $15.20 for 2 franks and a fries and NO drink?? Fuck that!! When I was a kid it was 25 cents each or 75 cents. I have plenty of packs of Nathan's franks (natural casing of course) at home!! I am in a pool league at a poolroom in the area (Av X & macDonald) every Sunday. I'll be going to L&B Spumoni Gardens after pool, never Nathan's any more.

Nathan's isn't even all that great. It's okay, but not worth that. It has nostalgia, that's about it. I doubt they taste like they used to either... I do like their fries there....there's something once in a while about those crispy on the outside crinkle fries, and moist inside....but haven't had it in quite a while.

I used to love Papaya King at 76th and 3rd better.

I love Papaya King too. When the holiday train went up to 96th on the 2nd Av line I would get off at 86th for a couple of hot dogs and a papaya and would make the train at 86th after it changed ends for the return trip. The one at 72nd and Bway is good too.

I do like Nathan's. It's the only franks I buy at the supermarket. It's just the prices at the Surf Av one is ridiculous. The franchised ones like the one in Wantagh isn't as expensive.

Yes, I do too. But still for those prices in Brooklyn, it's just okay.

The CI Nathans honors the coupons that they have for all Nathan’s. That’s how my dad and I would eat there.

I used to go there a lot with my dad. There was one in Times Square in the early 80s I used to go to with my dad also. He had a tremendous nostalgia for Nathan's because of the one in coney Island. I still think of my dad when going to the Coney island one....which I haven't in a few years....the last about 4 years ago before a cyclones game

That's ridiculous. There's a chain down here (Miami Subs & Grill that sells 2 franks, fries and a regular drink for under $10.00. Obviously, costs are less in South Florida then NYC, but still...

This is the location nearest to where I live

Yeah, the price is high.

It's kind of a tourist destination more than a neighborhood place for locals to eat at.

I did a shoot as an extra for a German TV show at the Nathan's on the boardwalk (near the Wonderwheel). The role I was booked as was "Nathan's patron". I guess they figured most people in Germany wouldn't know that that one wasn't the main one on Surf Av!! They even had background extras behind the counter (it was closed during the shoot) in the familiar striped Nathan's uniform.

A bit of history. When Nathan's began operation in Coney Island, his 5 cent Hotdog was priced to compete with a somewhat successful Feltmans hot dogs 🌭 that were popular at Coney Island. I remember my grandfather talking about going to Feltmans when he lived on prospect place in Brooklyn. Feltmans did not survive as a restaurant but 2 entrepreneurs bought the name and the recipe and Feltmans Hotdogs exist again though extremely hard to find in New York.

None that I've seen in South Florida, I don't know about further north. I went to one some years ago, when my mother and I were visiting a cousin in Welcome, North Carolina (Welcome is a suburb of Lexington, which is the county seat of Davidson County, some 50-60 miles north of Charlotte. Appears it is still there (we were last there in February 2006)
