At the time Jefferson died, July 4, 1826, he still owned about 130 slaves. Jefferson was also a multiple rapist. So I'm just fine with the removal of his statue. Jefferson appears on our currency, has a huge memorial in DC, and is honored as the author of the Declaration of Independence, our third President, and a Founder. One fewer statue isn't going to change any of that.

There were abolitionists back then and even people who condemned Jefferson for his hypocrisy in his life. That having been said, he’s honored not because he owned slaves but because of his contributions to the creation of this country. Nobody’s perfect and the USA’s existence is such a net positive that we can and should see around it. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t also learn the kind of asshole he was.

His contemporaries owned slaves and none of them saw the immorality of it. He reportedly raped Sally Hemings, his slave, and fathered children when she was "a minor". I use the scare quotes because in those days people got married in their teens and there was no "minor". People got married at ages we consider early because they only lived 45 years. So like most of our founding fathers, Jefferson has shit on him but his contributions to America outweigh his scumbaggery. It's not like we're talking Roger Taney here.
