I described a day worker program. I didn't say these guys were in it.

You're the one who made premature assumptions, which turned out to be correct.

It was obviously human smuggling from the beginning. If this were a legitimate program they would not have had so many people crammed into one car.

Articles from local news described a program where people walk over the boarder legally from Mexicali and then get picked up by vans. Obviously a van like the one in the crash would have been illegal, but it didn't have to be smuggling until there was confirmation, even though that was the most likely explanation.

I never said that you made it up. It sounds like you either misunderstood or unintentionally misrepresented what was in the article. You used the term "day laborer" and then in a more recent post described people walking over daily for work. Those people are not "day laborers (people hired to work a single job for a day)". They have specific jobs and visas. A day laborer is someone that stands outside of The Home Depot. You don't get visas for that.

I just passed along what the local news outlets were saying. They never said it wasn't human smuggling. They just brought up this other way in which large numbers of Mexican citizens end up in a van.

I agree the large number of people made smuggling the overwhelmingly likely reason.

All I want is for the news to be honest. If they don't know if the people are undocumented or not, don't speculate one way or the other. Don't mention laws that no one ever heard of to insinuate that they may have been documented. Just report the facts.

Thousands of people cross into the U.S. each day to work in the fields. The harvest of lettuce and other winter vegetable crops runs from November until March, and buses and SUVs carrying farmworkers are often rumbling down the rural roads s in the early morning hours.

You misrepresented them as “day workers”. They are seasonal workers and have visas for the season. Allegedly that is. IINM the employer gets the visas and who knows what they really do. The overwhelming number of farm worker visas doesn’t go back and forth. I didn’t even know that the visas allowed that. Of course what I don’t k ow far outweighs what I do know.

Huh?

These are workers who supposedly go back and forth every day. Obviously they have jobs to go to. You are the one who said that if they were day workers they had to be like those who congregate in front of Home Depot. I never said that and I never meant it.

Here's more recent information about day workers, indicating early evidence that that's not what they were.

The UFW took to Twitter on Tuesday, citing a bus accident that killed 19 farmworkers in 1974 and another that killed 13 tomato pickers in Fresno County in 1999. Initially, Strater said, the organization thought those involved in Tuesday’s crash might have been farmworkers, but evidence from the scene persuaded them otherwise.

“We did think, based on geography, that there was a likelihood that it was farmworker transport,” Strater said. “Once we realized it wasn’t a bus or a van, that started to change.”

Strater also looked at the debris photos and noted something missing: lunch boxes.

???

It was made of steel bollards that were built before former President Donald Trump blanketed much of the border with taller barriers that go deeper into the ground.

Though the "much of the border" claim is exaggerated, I believe, but I haven't been tracking it carefully.

Notice that they realized it wasn’t farm workers when they realized it wasn’t a bus or a van. The deaths they cited in 1974 and 1999 were apparently in vehicles that were used properly.
