Another Massive Overtime Scandal at the MTA

Posted by Train Dude on Thu Dec 3 23:15:09 2020

5 present and former employees of the MTA are charged in a massive overtime fraud scheme. The most aggregious of those arrested was a retired LIRR employee who for 2018 was paid the equivalent of 10 hours of overtime per day for 365 days. Four of the offenders were LIRR employees and one is a current level II supervisor at NYCTA. No word about the fate of the managers who allowed the fraud to occur.

In the police department it was dollars for collars. make a collar at the very end of your tour and you could get 16 hours until your next tour began and back on straight time. Before they changed the payroll system where you got the OT on the next check it used to be 2 months behind, so in those days there were double or triple the arrests in October for Christmas money in December!! Brooklyn Central Booking was upstairs in the 84 Pct Station House and in October the line of cops with their handcuffed prisoners snaked around the 84 parking lot and up the rear stairs!! That all ended for me after 16 years when I made sergeant and couldn't make arrests anymore!!!

I heard the same from my son in law who was at the 75th until he became a SGT.

Which is why, as a supervisor, you get into a unit (preferably a detective unit) where you have to stick around on OT to "supervise" the proceedings! 😉

As a sergeant they allowed 2 hours OT to type (and not on an electric IBM NTrainride, a manual) an unusual occurrence report for all unusual occurrences. While shootings in Brownsville & BedStuy were commonplace, the dept. still considered them unusual. And if there was no real unusuals I'd use my excellent writing skills to make a routine radio run "unusual".
