Tolls

Posted by BusRider on Wed Dec 2 16:31:16 2020

Do you agree with this charge?

“BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Tolls will increase for drivers on the New York Thruway who do not have an E-ZPass starting Jan. 1.

The State Thruway Authority voted Tuesday to raise tolls by 30% for people who are driving on the Thruway without an E-ZPass, a device that collects toll information and charges drivers.

The Thruway eliminated cash tolls in November. That means drivers without an E-ZPass are sent a bill by mail.

In addition to the 30% higher toll, drivers billed by mail will also be charged a $2 administrative fee every time they are billed.

This is the first time in 10 years that tolls on the Thruway have been raised, the State Thruway Authority said. The revenue from the increase will support the conversion to cashless tolling.

Tolls will also increase for most drivers crossing the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge in 2021 and 2022.“

Yeah, it's to screw over tourist and people who are out of state or casual users!

I can't help notice the byline is Buffalo. Most dilapidated toll road probably in the country.

For non-Staten Island issued EZPass, the hike I believe is 15%.

Most dilapidated toll road probably in the country.

It's maintained pretty well, even the free parts. When you cross the city line from the Major Deegan in the Bronx to the Thruway in Yonkers, the improvement is dramatic.

That said, it sounds like this change is charging people double. If the 30% increase covers the higher cost of billing by mail, there shouldn't be an extra administrative fee, and vice versa.

That’s what I was thinking, and with many things electronic now what could the fee be intended for. It’s interesting the degree of quality a road and even sidewalks have in different areas, some on the same street!

Yet, some people refuse to buy an EZPass, because they '"always have your $35.00" in their account.

Do you know how it works for transit and even truckers, is there like a contract where they purchase in bulk for their fleet?

I know for some people the online/account switch is very diffficult.

When I was on the job, I had a sergeant's operator who refused to get one because he had a girlfriend in Staten Island and was afraid his wife would see all the Verrazzano crossings on the bills.

But back then you could always hide the ezpass in the readproof bag in the glovebox and pay in cash. It would actually be less suspicious because the wife wouldn't wonder why he was reluctant to get an ezpass.

You can get a second e-zpass like criminals get second cell phones. It's difficult because you'd also need to get a po box or something for it to be mailed to.

Well, the NY Thruway has long since stopped handing out IBM punch cards as toll tickets. Maybe they are on Ebay.

It's even worse than that. Taxing out of towners because they can't vote and have no say. Hotel taxes, car "lease" taxes, restaurant and airport taxes, and toll taxes. You name it.

Neither the Thruway nor the PA Turnpike use toll tickets anymore, but the Thruway did until a few weeks ago. The NJ Turnpike still does, but I wonder for how long.

The tolls on the PA Turnpike are extremely high, I think more than double those on the Thruway per mile. Something like $40.00 to cross the state from NJ to Ohio. And IIRC, it isn't that well maintained either.

To get a toll ticket to sell on eBay, someone would have to say they "lost" theirs, and pay the toll from the farthest entry point to where they exit. Either that, or find a place where they can sneak off without going through a toll booth when they exit.

If you drive the length of the turnpike, or you start your trip at one end and get off more than halfway through, it's not any cheaper to have a ticket than not, since either way you are paying the highest toll for that exit (e.g., go from Exit 18W to 4).
