Whatever happened to all the gas tanks in the city?

Posted by Jeff Rosen on Fri Aug 7 16:57:19 2020

OK, this is a serious question. They were all over the city when I was growing up. I'm not even sure I knew what they were used for. Most people in NYC still cook and heat with natural gas yet you don't see any tanks any more. If they were important how are they getting by without them? What were they used for besides radio traffic reports on the LIE and what do they use now? Living on Long Island I've never seen any in Nassau & Suffolk even though a lot of people use natural gas.

I remember a big hubbub about blowing up the big tanks in Greenpoint by the Kosciuszko Bridge back in 2001 and news reports mentioned that they were obsolete but I don’t remember the explanation why, if any.

Do the "Elmhurst" gas tanks near the LIE still exist ?

Due to the increasing prevalence of much more compact gas cylinders, Brooklyn Union Gas began dismantling the gas tanks in 1996.

Apparently the Elmhurst tanks were imploded on July 15, 2001 at 0650.

Yep. I was invited to go on the gas company property to watch, but it was too early in the morning for me to get up.

No, they were demolished in 1995 or 1996

The article that Alm posted said they were replaced by compact cylinders but didn't really explain it. They were all over the city, now they're gone, and other places never had them even though they had natural gas. So why were they needed then but not now? What are the compact cylinders?

I only remember them in 3 locations, Greenpoint, Elmhurst and Coney Island. Where else were they?

I remember when visiting relatives on Plum 1rst Street near the Knapp Street exit of the Belt we used to pass one between the Belt & Plum First. I also have seen some in pictures in Manhattan in some of the old NY FB groups. I'm sure there were more.

There were several in Sunset park between 8th and 9th Ave and 65th and 66th Streets according to Wikipedia.

Near the beginning of this video about the Queensborough Ed Koch 59th Street Bridge you can see some gas tanks in the background on the Manhattan side. https://www.facebook.com/robert.spencer.1422/videos/10223414656817896/UzpfSTEzNjQ3NzExMzY6MjcwNzQ0MTg1MjkwODk2Mw/

I remember them at the site that became Downstate a Medical Center across from Kings County Hospital.

Those tanks were quite famous. Anyone who didn't know about this simply needed to listen to a 1010 WINS traffic report, especially during the AM rush hour.

The Elmhurst tanks were my favorite because they moved up and down to help regulate pressure, so they never looked exactly the same...

I don’t remember them at all. It wasn’t before my time, but we hardly ever needed to take the LIE through there and it was before I could drive. The Greenpoint gas tanks were after I could drive.

My father used to take us all around the city as kids, so to this day, I know thev4 boroughs like the back of my hand. (S.I., not too much, but I'm learning!) Also know Nassau and western Suffolk pretty good, as well as NJ. Not too familiar with the whole Yonkers, Money Earnin', New Rochelle area.

There were a couple of tanks in Rockaway Park on the LiLCo property east of the station on B. 116th.

Same here! That's pretty much how I managed to learn the NYC expressways/parkways at such an early age, then my interest in mass transit allowed me to easily link it all together. Same as you with Staten Island. I did learn a lot of lower Westchester County, but we didn't go to Nassau and Suffolk enough for me to learn it well.

A fair number of portions of Westchester are not particularly prosperous. Much of Yonkers, Mt. Vernon, Port Chester; parts of New Rochelle, Peekskill, and White Plains.

I only came to be familiar with Brooklyn and Manhattan. But I liked to look at maps, so I came to know all the highways and were all the major interchanges were.
