...no financial remuneration. no getting rich whilst in office either. if already rich, no access to those riches beyond "a comfortable living" whilst in office.

either the system is worthy of volunteers...or the hell with it. go with a dictator.

a variation of that could be, you get the customary salary...but only when you leave office. a lump sum payment.
