More exhalation and more inhalation because everyone is exercising hard. So one of the places where you are most likely to be breathing other people's exhalations. That makes a gym a really easy place to spread covid. Or let's put it another way. If covid didn't spread easily in a gym, where would it spread? We know a family barbecue can spread covid, and a bar can spread covid, so why wouldn't a gym be an even riskier place? |

Most gyms tell people to wipe down equipment and provide spray and paper towels to do so. I have theories as to why you don't lift weights. |

I've heard the opposite - it's mostly an airborne disease of tiny droplets. The heavier ones that you see fall right to the ground. It is the invisible ones that float around longer that cause the trouble. |

Posted by Orange Blossom Special on Mon Jul 6 19:04:52 2020, in response to Re: If Gillum won......, posted by Easy on Mon Jul 6 18:58:55 2020. I disagree. It is not a skin disease. A sick person will exhale 10k virus particles per exhale, in a gym that's about 15-26 feet spread. (unless I messed up and we're talking 10 million particles per exhale?)How many breaths do you take at a gym? And given that this is indoors, with heavy aerosolization, how many millions of active virus particles are you inhaling. Given that Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome is not a flu (I still have to argue with dumbass assholes about this), it mimics HIV in how it rapidly gets to work and races the immune system. I've heard a microbiologist state that your mucus won't do much to defend against it. So good old fashioned spit isn't an answer. Of course, all of this information is from oversea's and things are different in America. Including biology and physics. |

There has been lots of debate about this but I think that the scientific consensus is that it’s not airborne. It can be airborne but it doesn’t stay airborne. At least not in concentrations high enough to cause infection. |

Passing by a masked individual in the supermarket for 3 seconds is low risk, but chatting close-up with someone in a bar for an hour, even without any physical contact, isn't. |

Yeah, you can't 100% avoid hand contact.I go to a store and take something off a shelf and put it in my basket. Somewhere along the line something I bought might have been previously been touched by a covid-positive person and then put back on the shelf. So now I might have this slightly covid-contaminated item in my basket. The bagger touches it with her gloved hand, so now she can pass the bit of covid on to all my other purchases. Or she can contaminate something of mine from a prior purchase that she touched. Then I go home and thoroughly wash my hands, and only then do I put stuff away in the fridge. But it's still potentially ever so slightly contaminated - I don't wipe down every food item before putting it away. And we know 40 degrees F doesn't kill covid. So 12 hours later I take it out of the fridge, and once again my hands might be ever so slightly contaminated. If this were like some nerve agent the Russians use to kill people, we'd all be dead by now. And meanwhile, people go to parties, bars, and restaurants, and never touch anyone else, and end up sick. |
